John S. Norris
John S. Norris (1804 – July 25, 1876) was an American architect. He was born and raised in New York City, where he began his career as a mason. He advanced to being a builder and eventually listed himself in the telephone directory as an architect. In 1839, he went to Wilmington, North Carolina, where he first supervised construction, and then received his first independent commission to design the Wilmington Custom House in 1843. While working on that commission, he was asked to design the Savannah Custom House in Savannah, Georgia, which was built from 1848 to 1852. This led to numerous commissions in Savannah, including the Andrew Low House, the Mercer House, Massie Common School House and the Green-Meldrim House. Norris also designed the Unitarian Church, which was originally built in 1853 on Oglethorpe Square; this church was designed for free people of color. Cockspur Island
Cockspur Island is an island in the south channel of the Savannah River near Lazaretto Creek, northwest of Tybee Island, Georgia, United States. Most of the island is within the boundaries of Fort Pulaski National Monument. The island was so named on account of its bent shape. It was originally called Pepper Island and is also called Long Island. Historic buildings on the island include Fort Pulaski (built in 1847) and the Cockspur Island Lighthouse (built in 1837–39), designed by John S. Norris, the New York City architect. History The founder of Methodism, John Wesley landed at the island on February 6, 1736, and a monument marks the spot where Wesley conducted a service of thanksgiving. Dorothea Abrahams
Dorothea Abrahams (c. 1779 – February 6, 1853) was a philanthropist from the West Indies who left funds in her will to open the Abrahams Home for Indigent Widows of Savannah in Savannah, Georgia, United States. The Independent Presbyterian Church of Savannah, on Bull Street in Savannah, Georgia, is the first Presbyterian church in Georgia, founded in 1755. Alexander Smets
Alexander Augustus Smets (October 12, 1795 – May 9, 1862) was a French-born co-founder of the Georgia Historical Society in Savannah, Georgia, United States. A banker and philanthropist, he was also a large landowner in Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia and one of the state's wealthiest people. Life and career Smets was born on October 12, 1795, in Nantes, France, the son of Barthelemy Martin Smets, a native of Mechelen, Belgium, and Jean Marie Antoinette. At the age of eighteen, he was enlisted in the French Army and was stationed at La Rochelle. He was promoted to lieutenant, such was his dedication to the role he was initially given, but the war ended before he could serve in the role. Smets' friend, Charles Maurel, a merchant in Savannah, Georgia, persuaded him to return to the United States with him during a visit to France. Smets arrived in Savannah on November 20, 1816. The Juliette Gordon Low Historic District consists of three buildings in Savannah, Georgia, which are associated with the origins of the Girl Scouts of the USA. They are the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low, at 10 East Oglethorpe Avenue, the Andrew Low House, at 329 Abercorn Street, and the Andrew Low Carriage House (also known as the First Girl Scout Headquarters), at 330 Drayton Street. The U.S. Customhouse is a historic custom house located in Savannah, Georgia, Savannah in Chatham County, Georgia. It was built to house offices of the United States Customs Service. Building history The U.S. Custom House symbolizes Savannah's importance to Georgia's import-export trade during the 18th and 19th centuries. The site is also significant in Savannah's history.
