Joensuu
Joensuu (; ; ) is a city in Finland and the regional capital of North Karelia. It is located in the eastern interior of the country and in the Finnish Lakeland. The population of Joensuu is approximately , while the sub-region has a population of approximately . It is the most populous municipality in Finland, and the ninth most populous urban area in the country. Joensuu was founded in 1848 by the Russian Emperor Nicholas I. The city is located on the northern shore of Lake Pyhäselkä, the northern part of Lake Saimaa, at the mouth of the River Pielinen. The nearest major city, Kuopio in North Savonia, is located to the west. From Joensuu, the distance to Lappeenranta, the capital of South Karelia, is along Highway 6. North Karelia
North Karelia (or ''Northern Karelia'', ; ) is a region in eastern Finland. It borders the regions of Kainuu, North Savo, South Savo and South Karelia, as well as Russia's Republic of Karelia. It is the easternmost region of Finland and shares a border with Russia. The city of Joensuu is the capital and the largest settlement of the region. North Karelia has successfully reduced chronic diseases through public health measures. Joensuu Railway Station
Joensuu railway station (in Finnish: Joensuun rautatieasema) is located in Joensuu, North Karelia, Finland. The station was opened in 1894. The station is served by passenger trains to Helsinki (via Lappeenranta, Kouvola and Lahti), Nurmes and Pieksämäki. The line to Helsinki via Lappeenranta is electrified, all other routes are operated by diesel hauled trains. The passenger train service to Nurmes was originally to close in 2016, but as of 2019 is still in service. Passenger trains to Helsinki are mainly operated by InterCity carriages or Pendolino units. Joensuu Arena
The Joensuu Arena is a large multi-purpose hall and a center for large events in Joensuu, Finland, built primarily for the use of athletes. It is the largest building in the Mehtimäki's sports area, right near the center of Joensuu. The arena's equipment level, acoustics and lighting power are also suitable for organizing large meetings, trade fairs, events and concerts. The arena was completed in February 2004. When completed, it was the largest wooden building in Finland. Paavo Lipponen, the Speaker of Parliament at the time, officially inaugurated it on March 17, 2004. The arena is a venue for major trade fairs and events. Among other things, various fairs have been held there, the largest of which is the Karelian Fair 2004, and large public events, such as the Gospel Festival 2006 and the Party of Finland Party Conference 2008. The Joensuu City Hall () is a brick building in the center of Joensuu, Finland, designed by Eliel Saarinen and completed in 1914, combining styles of Romantic Nationalism and late Art Nouveau. North Karelia Central Hospital
The North Karelia Central Hospital () is a hospital located in the city of Joensuu in North Karelia, Finland. It was built in 1953, which makes it the oldest central hospital in the whole country. The hospital is located near the city center of Joensuu on the top of Niinivaara, from where its white main building can be seen tens of kilometers all the way to Koli. The height of the 12-storey building is 45 meters. Architects Jussi Paatela together with Olli Pöyry and Marja Pöyry were responsible for the design of the hospital buildings. In North Karelia, the hospital provides special medical services to a total of 166,400 inhabitants in 13 municipalities. The hospital also has a helipad for patient transport. Saimaa
Saimaa ( , ; ) is a lake located in the Finnish Lakeland area in southeastern Finland. With a surface area of approximately , it is the largest lake in Finland, and the fourth-largest natural freshwater lake in Europe. The name Saimaa likely comes from a non-Uralic, non-Indo European substrate language. Alternatively, it has been proposed that the name may be connected to the Sami word ''sápmi''.
