Jean H. Thurston
Jean Holowach Thurston (22 June 1917 – 29 April 2017) was an American pediatric neurologist, known for her research on epilepsy. She was a professor of pediatrics at Washington University School of Medicine from 1949, until her retirement in 1987. In 2004, she won the first Roger and Mary Brumback Lifetime Achievement Award from the Child Neurology Society. Early life and education Jean Holowach Thurston was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. She received her medical degree from the University of Alberta in 1941, one of only three women in her medical school class. She worked as a pediatrician in Calgary during World War II. In 1945 she went to St. Louis for a two-year fellowship in pediatrics and metabolic disorders at Washington University School of Medicine. Epilepsy
Epilepsy is a group of non-communicable neurological disorders characterized by recurrent epileptic seizures. Epileptic seizures can vary from brief and nearly undetectable periods to long periods of vigorous shaking due to abnormal electrical activity in the brain. These episodes can result in physical injuries, either directly such as broken bones or through causing accidents. In epilepsy, seizures tend to recur and may have no immediate underlying cause. Isolated seizures that are provoked by a specific cause such as poisoning are not deemed to represent epilepsy. People with epilepsy may be treated differently in various areas of the world and experience varying degrees of social stigma due to the alarming nature of their symptoms.
