Jasmin Santana
Jasmin Santana is a Cleveland City Council member representing Ward 14. The first Latina member, she serves as majority whip. Early life and education Santana was born in Cleveland at The MetroHealth System, MetroHealth around 1979. She graduated from Cleveland Metropolitan School District schools and Lincoln West High School. Her mother is a native of Puerto Rico. Santana has two teenage children. Santana developed a breast cancer outreach program at MetroHealth. Political career In 2017, Santana was elected to Cleveland City Council in Ward 14. She was named majority whip in 2021. She advocates for Spanish language in the United States, Spanish language access and a more coordinated welcome for Immigration to the United States, immigrants. She advocated for CentroVilla25, a multi-stalled market that ends the food desert in the Clark-Fulton neighborhood. A food desert is an area that has limited access to food that is plentiful, affordable, or nutritious. In contrast, an area with greater access to supermarkets and vegetable shops with fresh foods may be called a food oasis. The designation considers the type and the quality of food available to the population, in addition to the accessibility of the food through the size and the proximity of the food stores. Food deserts are associated with various health outcomes, including higher rates of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, specifically in areas where high poverty rates occur.
