James Fred Young
James Fred Young, known as Fred Young, was the seventh president of Elon University, a private liberal arts university located in Elon, North Carolina. Young served as president of Elon from 1973 to 1998. He was succeeded by Leo Lambert. Young grew up in Burnsville, North Carolina. He attended Mars Hill University, Mars Hill College and Wake Forest University, received his master's degree in education administration from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, UNC-Chapel Hill, and received his doctorate from Columbia University. After serving as a principal, assistant superintendent, and superintendent, he was named president of Elon. Young has been credited with transforming Elon from a regional institution serving average students into a selective institution with a national reputation. Elon University
Elon University is a private university in Elon, North Carolina. Founded in 1889 as Elon College, Elon is organized into six schools, most of which offer bachelor's degrees and several of which offer master's degrees or professional doctorate degrees. Located in North Carolina's Piedmont region, Elon is situated on a suburban campus between the cities of Greensboro and Raleigh. Elon () is a town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. It is part of the Burlington metropolitan statistical area. The population as of the 2020 census was 11,324. The town of Elon is home to Elon University. Elon began in 1881 as a North Carolina Railroad depot in between the stations of Goldsboro and Charlotte, called "Mill Point” because it was envisioned to be a shipping point for area cotton mills. Locals called it “Boone’s Crossing.” Because of a growing population, a post office was built, which established a more permanent residency in 1888. In 1889, the local Christian Assembly created an institution of higher learning called the “Graham Normal College”. Leo Michael Lambert, Ph.D. (born June 30, 1955 in Schenectady, New York) is President Emeritus of Elon University, a private university located in Elon, North Carolina. Lambert served as Elon's eighth president from 1999 to 2018 and assumed the title of President Emeritus on March 1, 2018. He was succeeded by Connie Ledoux Book. Burnsville, North Carolina
Burnsville is a town that serves as the county seat of Yancey County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,693 at the 2010 census. History The town was founded on March 6, 1834, from land conveyed by John "Yellow Jacket" Bailey, and it was named after Captain Otway Burns, a naval hero of the War of 1812. In 1909, a statue of Captain Burns was given to the town by his grandson, Walter Francis Burns Sr., and it was set on a granite pedestal in the center of the town square. It has an inscription that reads, in part, "He Guarded Well Our Seas, Let Our Mountains Honor Him." Due to damages, the original statue was replaced in the early 2000s.
