James A. Jobling
James A. Jobling is a British naturalist and author. Jobling is known for his work on the taxonomy of birds, writing and publishing one of the most comprehensive reference works on the etymology of the names of genera and species of birds around the world. Biography Jobling was initially a civil servant with experience in finance and land registration. Since childhood, he had an interest in the natural world, especially in birds and their names. He worked for several years writing the ''Dictionary of Scientific Bird Names'', published in 1991 by Oxford University Press. The ''Dictionary'' would later be reissued by British publisher Helm in 2010, under the name ''Helm Dictionary of Scientific Bird Names''. Jobling became closely associated with Lynx Edicions through the creation and editing of the ''HBW Alive Key to Scientific Names in Ornithology'' (2014–2020), which was later incorporated into the Handbook of the Birds of the World. Bexhill-on-Sea
Bexhill-on-Sea (often shortened to Bexhill) is a seaside town and civil parish in the Rother District in the county of East Sussex in South East England. It is located along the Sussex Coast and between the towns of Hastings, England, Hastings and Eastbourne. History The first reference to Bexhill, or Bexelei as it was originally called, was in a charter granted by King Offa of Mercia in 772 AD. It is recorded that Offa had "defeated the men of Hastings" in 771 AD. At this time, the term Hastings would have referred to this whole area rather than the town itself as it does today. In the charter, Offa established a church and religious community in Bexhill. During the Norman Conquest of 1066, it appears that Bexhill was largely destroyed. The Domesday survey of 1086 records that the manor was worth £20 before the conquest, was "waste" in 1066 and was worth £18 10s in 1086. eBird is an online database of bird observations providing scientists, researchers and amateur naturalists with real-time data about bird distribution and abundance. British Ornithologists' Club
The British Ornithologists' Club (BOC) aims to promote discussion between members and others interested in ornithology, and to facilitate the dissemination of scientific information concerned with ornithology. The BOC has a special interest in avian systematics, taxonomy and distribution. The BOC was founded at a meeting of 15 members of the British Ornithologists' Union held in Covent Garden, London on 5 October 1892. This was at a time when individuals and expeditions were exploring remote parts of the world, discovering many new species of birds in the process and the BOC was formed to enable members to meet regularly to present papers, exhibit specimens and engage in discussion on wider ornithological matters. The ''Handbook of the Birds of the World'' (HBW) is a multi-volume series produced by the Spanish publishing house Lynx Edicions in partnership with BirdLife International. It is the first handbook to cover every known living species of bird. The series was edited by Josep del Hoyo, Andrew Elliott, Jordi Sargatal and David A. Christie. All 16 volumes have been published. For the first time an animal class will have all the species illustrated and treated in detail in a single work.
