J. Malcolm Simon Stadium
J. Malcolm Simon Stadium was the home of the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT Highlanders) men's and women's soccer teams. The soccer teams played their home games and practice on campus at the all-weather Sprinturf-surfaced ''Lubetkin Field'' (which was in the stadium). The soccer field/stadium included lighting for nighttime play, bleacher seating for more than 1,000 spectators, a press box and a scoreboard. The NJIT Baseball team and NJIT Track teams also used the facility for practice. NJIT Highlanders
The NJIT Highlanders, formerly the New Jersey Tech Highlanders, are the varsity sport members of the Division I NCAA-affiliated sports teams of New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). There are ten men's teams, seven women's teams, and three club teams along with a variety of intramural teams. The school's primary conference is the America East Conference. In November 2017 NJIT opened the Wellness and Events Center (WEC) which incorporates upgraded facilities for most Division 1 sports including a 3,500-seat arena for Basketball and Volleyball. Behind the Highlander name and logo NJIT is located in an area of Newark presently known as University Heights, and formerly known as the Newark Highlands. In addition, NJIT's mailing address used to be High Street until the street was renamed in memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. These various references to 'High' are, in large measure, what led the school's students to choose ''The Highlander'' as its mascot. Baseball
Baseball is a bat-and-ball sport played between two teams of nine players each, taking turns batting and fielding. The game occurs over the course of several plays, with each play generally beginning when a player on the fielding team, called the pitcher, throws a ball that a player on the batting team, called the batter, tries to hit with a bat. Track And Field Athletics
Track and field is a sport that includes athletic contests based on running, jumping, and throwing skills. The name is derived from where the sport takes place, a running track and a grass field for the throwing and some of the jumping events. Track and field is categorized under the umbrella sport of athletics, which also includes road running, cross country running and racewalking. The foot racing events, which include sprints, middle- and long-distance events, racewalking, and hurdling, are won by the athlete who completes it in the least time. The jumping and throwing events are won by those who achieve the greatest distance or height. Wellness And Events Center
The Wellness and Events Center (WEC) is 220,000 sq ft. sports and recreation facility that includes a 3,500 seat basketball arena in Newark, New Jersey. It was built at a cost of $102 million by the New Jersey Institute of Technology. The Wellness and Events Center is the home court of the NJIT Highlanders who joined the NCAA Division I American East Conference on July 1, 2020. The WEC replaced the former arena of the Highlanders, the Fleisher Center. The new arena broke ground on November 12, 2015, and opened in time for the 2017–18 basketball season.
