Ithaca (; Greek: Ιθάκη, ''Ithakē'') was, in Greek mythology, the island home of the hero Odysseus. The specific location of the island, as it was described in Homer's ''Odyssey'', is a matter for debate. There have been various theories about its location. Modern Ithaca has traditionally been accepted to be Homer's island. One recent alternative candidate is Paliki, which may have been an island separated from the rest of Kefalonia, as argued by Bittlestone, Diggle and Underhill in '' Odysseus Unbound''. Ithaca is a town in Richland County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 648 at the 2000 census. The unincorporated communities of Aubrey, Bear Valley, Ithaca, Keyesville, and Neptune are located in the town. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 36.0 square miles (93.3 km2), all of it land. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 648 people, 249 households, and 187 families residing in the town. The population density was 18.0 people per square mile (6.9/km2). There were 275 housing units at an average density of 7.6 per square mile (2.9/km2). ''Project Ithaca'' is a 2019 Canadian science fiction thriller film directed by Nicholas Humphries and starring James Gallanders. Plot The film begins in a secret government lab run by the U.S. War Department, where a mysterious young girl is shown interfacing with alien technology recovered during the Roswell UFO incident. The young girl has strong telepathic abilities, and is able to relate her experiences in the alien device by typing them out on a computer monitor. The girl, called Sera, begins to die due to her interaction with the machine, and is rescued by a researcher named John. The film then switches to a diverse group of humans aboard a UFO orbiting Earth, where the group is being held against their will. Each human is restrained separately, in a harness where their arms and legs are restrained by black tentacles. ''Ithaca'' is a 2015 American drama film directed by Meg Ryan and written by Erik Jendresen. It is based on the 1943 novel '' The Human Comedy'' by William Saroyan. The film stars Alex Neustaedter, Jack Quaid, Meg Ryan, Sam Shepard, Hamish Linklater and Tom Hanks. The film was released on September 9, 2016, by Momentum Pictures. Plot In 1942, Homer Macauley (Alex Neustaedter) is a boy determined to be the best and fastest bicycle telegraph messenger of the small fictional town of Ithaca, CA. His older brother, Marcus (Jack Quaid), along with most of the young men of the town, has gone to serve in World War II, leaving the families worried. Adèle Daphne Geras (née Weston; born 15 March 1944) is an English writer for young children, teens and adults. Early life Geras was born in Jerusalem, British Mandatory Palestine to British Jewish parents. Her father (later a lawyer and High Court judge in Tanganyika) was in the Colonial Service and she had a varied childhood, living in countries such as Nigeria, Cyprus, Tanganyika (now the mainland part of Tanzania), Gambia and British North Borneo in a short span of time. She attended Roedean School in Brighton and then graduated from St Hilda's College, Oxford with a degree in Modern Languages. She was known for her stage and vocal talents, but decided instead to become a full-time writer. Work Geras's first book was ''Tea at Mrs Manderby's'', which was published in 1976.
