Gymnastic Club Iraklis Thessaloniki Football Club ( el, Γυμναστικός Σύλλογος Ηρακλής Θεσσαλονίκης) is a Greek professional football club based in the city of Thessaloniki, Macedonia, Greece. As of 2022, the club competes in the Super League Greece 2. It plays its home matches at Kaftanzoglio Stadium. Founded in 1908 as "Macedonikos Gymnasticos Syllogos" (''Macedonian Gymnastics Club''), they are one of the oldest in Greek football and the oldest in Thessaloniki, hence the nickname ''Ghireos'' (meaning ''the Elder''). A year later, the name "Iraklis" (''Heracles'') was added to the club's name as an honour to the ancient Greek hero Heracles (or Hercules as the Roman equivalent). Gymnasticos Syllogos Iraklis ( el, Γυμναστικός Σύλλογος Ηρακλής, en, Gymnastics Club Heracles), commonly referred to as Iraklis, is a Greek multi-sports club based in Thessaloniki. The club was founded in 1908 as "Macedonikos Gymnasticos Syllogos" (''Macedonian Gymnastics Club'') and is one of the oldest and most historic sports-clubs in Greece. The history of the Jews of Thessaloniki reaches back two thousand years. The city of Thessaloniki (also known as Salonika) housed a major Jewish community, mostly Eastern Sephardim, until the middle of the Second World War. Sephardic Jews immigrated to the city following the expulsion of Jews from Spain by Catholic rulers under the Alhambra Decree of 1492.
