International Stuttering Awareness Day
International Stuttering Awareness Day (ISAD), or International Stammering Awareness Day, is an annual celebration held on October 22. It was first held in the UK and Ireland, in 1998. The day is intended to raise public awareness of the issues faced by millions of people – one percent of the world's population – who stutter, or stammer. Every year, stuttering communities and associations around the world get together, put on events and campaign to highlight how certain aspects of society can be difficult for people who stammer; to challenge negative attitudes and discrimination; and to debunk myths that people who stammer are nervous or less intelligent. ISAD also celebrates the many notable figures who stammer who have made a mark on the world now and throughout history in the fields of science, politics, philosophy, art, cinema and music. International Stuttering Association
The International Stuttering Association (ISA), founded in Linköping, Sweden, in July 1995, is a nonprofit international support group organization for people who stutter. The current chair (since 2019) is Anja Herde. Membership Membership of ISA is open to national or international self-help organizations of people who stutter. Individuals can become non-voting special friends or honorary members. The first honorary lifetime members of ISA are Jane Fraser of the Stuttering Foundation of America The Stuttering Foundation of America provides free online resources, services and support to those who stutter and their families, as well as support for research into the causes of stuttering. Disability is the experience of any condition that makes it more difficult for a person to do certain activities or have equitable access within a given society. Disabilities may be cognitive, developmental, intellectual, mental, physical, sensory, or a combination of multiple factors. European Association Of Service Providers For Persons With Disabilities
The European Association of Service providers for Persons with Disabilities (abbreviated: EASPD), based in Brussels, Belgium, is an umbrella organization that represents approximately 17,000 support service providers for persons with disabilities from 33 European countries at a European level. History EASPD was founded in 1996 with 5 partners. As the organisation began to grow, it held its first conference in 1999 in Dublin, Ireland, the topic being “Partnership— the key to quality services”. By 2001, EASPD represented 5,000 services, and had become a member of European NGOs Social Platform and ECAS ( Euro Citizen Advice Service), and had signed cooperation agreements with IASSID and Inclusion Europe. The European League of Stuttering Associations (ELSA) was set up in 1990 by organisations in 12 countries to promote a greater knowledge and understanding of stuttering and to bring together, as a top umbrella organisation, the national stuttering self-help organisations of Europe. ELSA is a trans-national, cross-cultural organisation. It seeks resources only open to multi-national groups, extends the exchange-of-information network, and lobbies for stutterers at a prominent international level.
