International Harvester Payhauler
The Payhauler is a series of dump trucks that were produced from 1956 to 2003. Introduced by International Harvester as the International Harvester Payhauler, the line was spun off in 1982 into a separate company, the Payhauler Corporation. History In 1956, the International Harvester company introduced the Payhauler line of heavy duty off-highway rear-dump trucks, initially available as a 25-ton (23t) capacity rear-wheel-drive model. Unlike other haul trucks it had dual tires on the front (steering) axle and carried the load with the same weight on both axles. Early models had a Detroit Diesel 16V71 engine; later Cummins engines were used. In 1964, the Payhauler 180 entered service. The 45-ton (43t) truck became the first large, all-wheel-drive end-dump truck in the market. Dump Truck
A dump truck, known also as a dumping truck, dump trailer, dumper trailer, dump lorry or dumper lorry or a dumper for short, is used for transporting materials (such as dirt, gravel, or demolition waste) for construction as well as coal. A typical dump truck is equipped with an open-box bed, which is hinged at the rear and equipped with hydraulic rams to lift the front, allowing the material in the bed to be deposited ("dumped") on the ground behind the truck at the site of delivery. International Harvester
The International Harvester Company (often abbreviated by IHC, IH, or simply International ( colloq.)) was an American manufacturer of agricultural and construction equipment, automobiles, commercial trucks, lawn and garden products, household equipment, and more. It was formed from the 1902 merger of McCormick Harvesting Machine Company and Deering Harvester Company and three smaller manufactures: Milwaukee; Plano; and Warder, Bushnell, and Glessner (manufacturers of Champion brand). In the 1980s all divisions were sold off except for International Trucks, which changed its parent company name to Navistar International (NYSE: NAV). Its brands included McCormick, Deering, and later McCormick-Deering, as well as International. Along with the Farmall and Cub Cadet tractors, International was also known for the Scout and Travelall vehicle nameplates. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) is a form of engine and transmission layout used in motor vehicles, in which the engine drives the rear wheels only. Detroit Diesel Series 71
The Detroit Diesel Series 71 is a two-stroke diesel engine series, available in both inline and V configurations, manufactured by Detroit Diesel. The number 71 refers to the nominal displacement per cylinder in cubic inches, a rounding off of . Inline models included one, two, three, four and six cylinders, and the V-types six, eight, 12, 16 and 24 cylinders. The two largest V units used multiple cylinder heads per bank to keep the head size and weight to manageable proportions, the V-16 using four heads from the four-cylinder inline model and the V-24 using four heads from the inline six-cylinder model. This feature also assisted in keeping down the overall cost of these large engines by maintaining parts commonality with the smaller models.
