International Ettore Pozzoli Piano Competition
The International Ettore Pozzoli Piano Competition, for tradition and amount of prize, is one of the oldest and most prestigious piano competitions in the world, taking place in Seregno, Italy since 1959 and held every 2 years. The Story The contest was founded by Gina Gambini, widow of the Italian pianist, Maestro Ettore Pozzoli, wishing to honour the memory of her husband by giving musicians from all over the world an opportunity to show their artistic skills. Up to now, more than 1.500 pianists coming from all over the world have participated in the 25 editions of the competition that has taken place in the city in northern Italy. In 1959, the first pianist to win the International Ettore Pozzoli Piano Competition was Maestro Maurizio Pollini, now considered one of the major musicians in the world. Piano
The piano is a stringed keyboard instrument in which the strings are struck by wooden hammers that are coated with a softer material (modern hammers are covered with dense wool felt; some early pianos used leather). It is played using a keyboard, which is a row of keys (small levers) that the performer presses down or strikes with the fingers and thumbs of both hands to cause the hammers to strike the strings. It was invented in Italy by Bartolomeo Cristofori around the year 1700. Hugh Tinney
Hugh Tinney (born 1958) is an Irish pianist. Biography Tinney was a pupil at Gonzaga College, Dublin through the 1970s, and studied physics at Trinity College Dublin. In 1983 he won the first prize of the International Ettore Pozzoli Piano Competition in Seregno, Italy, and in 1984, the Paloma O'Shea Santander International Competition in Spain, to which he would return in 1990 as a jury member. He is also a laureate of the 9th Leeds Int. Competition. He debuted in the 1987 Proms, performing Beethoven's 5th Piano Concerto along with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Evgeny Konnov
Evgeny Konnov (born 19 November 1992 in Chirchiq, Uzbekistan) is a Russian pianist. He is the winner of first prizes in more than 30 international competitions, including first prize and public prize at the 64th Maria Canals International Music Competition in Barcelona 2018, first prize and public prize at the 31st International Ettore Pozzoli Piano Competition in Seregno 2019, first prize at the 14th Unisa International Piano Competition in South Africa 2020. William Barry Douglas (born 23 April 1960) in Belfast, Northern Ireland, is a classical pianist and conductor. Early life and education He studied piano, cello, clarinet and organ while growing up in Belfast. He first studied in Belfast while attending Methodist College Belfast and, at 16, had lessons with Felicitas LeWinter, a pupil of Emil von Sauer and grand-pupil of Franz Liszt. In London he studied with John Barstow for four years and then studied privately with Maria Curcio, the last and favourite pupil of Artur Schnabel, going on to study with the Russian pianist Yevgeny Malinin in Paris.
