Ilga Kreituse
Ilga Kreituse (née Grava, born July 5, 1952, in Tērvete) is a Latvian politician, historian, and former Speaker of the Saeima. Biography Kreituse was born in Tērvete and lived with her family, later moving to Jūrmala. In 1970, she graduated from Jūrmala Secondary School No. 3. From 1972 until 1977, Kreituse studied at the Faculty of History and Philosophy at the University of Latvia. From 1977 to 1980, she was involved with postgraduate studies at Moscow State University. In 1982, she left the university, defending her dissertation on "the use of mathematical methods in historical science." After returning to Latvia, she worked at the Faculty of History and Philosophy, the Institute of Party History and the Latvian Academy of Sciences. She also worked as a teacher at Riga State Gymnasium No.1. She was elected to the 5th Saeima as a part of the Democratic Center Party. Speaker Of The Saeima
The Speaker of the Saeima ( lv, Saeimas priekšsēdētājs; lit. "Chairperson of the Saeima") is the presiding officer of the Parliament of Latvia, the Saeima. If the President of Latvia resigns from office, dies or is removed from office before their term has ended, the Speaker of the Saeima shall assume the duties of the President until the Saeima has elected a new President. Similarly, the Speaker of the Saeima shall assume the duties of the President if the latter is away from Latvia or for any other reason unable to fulfil the duties of office. The Speaker of the Saeima must be elected at the first meeting of the current convocation of the Saeima. Latvian Academy Of Sciences
The Latvian Academy of Sciences ( lv, Latvijas Zinātņu akadēmija) is the official science academy of Latvia and is an association of the country's foremost scientists. The academy was founded as the ''Latvian SSR Academy of Sciences'' ( lv, Latvijas PSR Zinātņu akadēmija). It is located in Riga. The current President of the academy is Ivars Kalviņš. Building The Academy of Sciences edifice was built after World War II, between 1951 and 1961, collecting the necessary financing from the newly established kolkhozes in Latvia and – as further expenses increased, collecting the finances as "voluntary donations" deducted from the salaries of the Latvian rural population. The building is decorated with several hammer and sickle symbols as well as Latvian folk ornaments and motifs. Christian Democratic Union (Latvia)
The Christian Democratic Union ( lv, Kristīgi demokrātiskā savienība, KDS) is a minor Christian-democratic political party in Latvia. It is currently led by Māra Viktorija Zilgalve and Secretary General Armands Agrums. History The KDS was founded in 1991. The party participated in the 1993 Saeima election and obtained 5.0% of the vote and six seats. In the next parliamentary election in 1995 the party contested in alliance with the Latvian Farmers' Union and won 6.3% of the vote and eight seats. In 1998 it joined forces with the Workers' Party and the Latvian Green Party, in 2002 with Latvia's First Party and in 2006 with the Latvian Social Democratic Workers' Party. The Latvian Green Party ( lv, Latvijas Zaļā partija, LZP) is a green political party in Latvia. It was founded in 1990. It was a member of the European Green Party from 2003 until its expulsion in 2019. Saeima
The Saeima () is the parliament of the Republic of Latvia. It is a unicameral parliament consisting of 100 members who are elected by proportional representation, with seats allocated to political parties which gain at least 5% of the popular vote. Elections are scheduled to be held once every four years, normally on the first Saturday of October. The most recent elections were held in October 2022. The President of Latvia can dismiss the Saeima and request early elections. The procedure for dismissing it involves substantial political risk to the president, including a risk of loss of office. On 28 May 2011 president Valdis Zatlers decided to initiate the dissolution of the Saeima, which was approved in a referendum, and the Saeima was dissolved on 23 July 2011.
