Ian Martin (writer)
Ian Martin (born 1953) is an English comedy writer. Martin was a writer for the BAFTA-winning BBC series ''The Thick of It''. He was famously hired as "swearing consultant" in 2005 by the show's creator, Armando Iannucci, for Series 1 of the political satire and went on to become a full member of the writing team. He won an Emmy for his writing across five series of ''Veep'' and was BAFTA nominated for co-writing ''The Death of Stalin''. Early life Martin was born in London and has lived in Lancaster since 1988. Career Ian Martin edits the satirical website martian.fm. He is a weekly columnist for the ''Architects' Journal'' and a regular contributor to ''The Guardian'' newspaper. The Royal Academy of Arts (RA) is an art institution based in Burlington House on Piccadilly in London. Jeremy Corbyn, the Member of Parliament for Islington North, stood as a candidate in the 2015 British Labour Party leadership election, in a successful campaign that made him the leader of the Labour Party. "Monkey hanger" is a colloquial nickname by which people from the town of Hartlepool, England are sometimes known. Origin of the name According to local folklore, the term originates from a likely apocryphal incident in which a monkey was hanged in the town of Hartlepool, England. During the Napoleonic Wars, a French ''chasse-marée'' was wrecked in a storm off the coast of Hartlepool. The only survivor from the ship was a monkey, allegedly dressed in a French Army uniform to provide amusement for the crew. On finding the monkey on the beach, a group of locals decided to hold an impromptu trial. Because the monkey was unable to answer their questions, and because they had seen neither a monkey nor a Frenchman before, they concluded that the monkey must be a French spy.
