Iyorchia Ayu
Iyorchia Ayu (born 15 November 1952) is a Nigerian politician; he is the current chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee. A former Nigerian senator, he served as the 5th president of the Nigerian Senate in the Nigerian Third Republic (1992–1993). He later served in various ministerial positions in the Cabinet of President Olusegun Obasanjo between 1999 and 2007. Early career Ayu was born in Gboko in Benue State. He taught sociology in the University of Jos in Plateau State, including courses on the art and science of Marxism, and was the chairman of the Jos University chapter of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). After entering politics, he was influential among the majority of Tiv people in his home state of Benue. He was elected senator in the Third Republic on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and became Senate president. Benue State
Benue is a State in the North Central Nigeria, North Central region of Nigeria. It is popularly referred to as part of the Middle belt. It has an estimated population of about 4,253,641 in List of Nigerian states by population, the 2006 census. The state was created in 1976 and was among the seven states created at that time. Third Nigerian Republic
The Third Republic was the planned republican government of Nigeria in 1992 which was to be governed by the Third Republican constitution. In the Third Republic, there were to be state governors, state assemblies, and the National Assembly, a federal legislature, all democratically elected. However, it would not be fully democratic, as there was no democratically elected President. Then-President Ibrahim Babangida's supposed transition turned out to be a ploy to keep executive powers and grant the National Assembly limited legislative powers; all laws passed by the Senate and House of Representatives would have to pass the National Defence and Security Council of Nigeria before finally being approved by the President. Tiv People
Tiv (or Tiiv) are a Bantu ethnic group. They constitute approximately 2.4% of Nigeria's total population, and number over 5 million individuals throughout Nigeria and Cameroon. The Tiv language is spoken by over 5 million people in Nigeria, with a few speakers in Cameroon. Most of the language's Nigerian speakers are found in Benue, Taraba, Nasarawa, Plateau, Cross River, Adamawa, Kaduna, Niger, Kogi and the Federal Capital Territory Abuja. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is a Nigerian union of university academic staff, founded in 1978. ASUU is an offshoot of the Nigerian Association of University Teachers (NAUT) which was established in 1965.
