Israel Shield
Israel Shield (Hebrew: מגן ישראל) is Israel's national program to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. Spearheaded by the Ministry of Health, it is led by a "COVID czar," a position that, since June 2021, is held by Salman Zarka. The institution of the program coincided with the absorption of the March 2020 into the July 2020 legislation (also known informally as the "Great Coronavirus Law"). The COVID czar Subordinate to the Minister of Health and to the ministry's director, the COVID czar still directly consults with the Prime Minister. The COVID czar's recommendations generally receive wide publicity in the press. All three COVID czars had been doctors who had previously held prominent public health roles. COVID-19 Pandemic In Israel
The COVID-19 pandemic in Israel also known as the coronavirus pandemic in Israel ( he, מגפת הקורונה בישראל) is part of the worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 () caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (). The first case in Israel was confirmed on 21 February 2020, when a female citizen tested positive for COVID-19 at the Sheba Medical Center after return from quarantine on the '' Diamond Princess'' ship in Japan. As a result, a 14-day home isolation rule was instituted for anyone who had visited South Korea or Japan, and a ban was placed on non-residents and non-citizens who were in South Korea for 14 days before their arrival. In addition to overseeing health services provided by Kupat Holim and family health centers such as Tipat Halav, the ministry maintains general hospitals, psychiatric hospitals, mental health clinics, treatment programs for substance abuse, and facilities for the chronically ill. Salman Zarka ( ar, سلمان الزرقا, he, סלמאן זרקא) is a Druze-Israeli physician and the Director of Ziv Medical Center in Safed, reservist of The Israel Defense Forces in the rank of Colonel, senior lecturer at the Faculty of Social Welfare and Health in the School of Public Health of Haifa University and senior lecturer in the Department of Military Medicine in the military doctors top track of Hebrew University in Jerusalem. In 2019, Dr. Zarka was selected as one of 12 torch-lighters at the annual Independence Day ceremony on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. As of July 2021, he has been serving as Israel's COVID czar. Nitzan Horowitz ( he, נִצָּן הוֹרוֹבִיץ; Transliterated: ; born 24 February 1965) is an politician and former journalist serving as Minister of Health since 2021. He is currently leader of Meretz. He previously was the chief U.S. correspondent and commentator for the Israeli News Company, known as Channel 2 News. Before rejoining television, he served two full terms in the Knesset (2009-2015) on the Meretz list. In 2013, he ran for mayor of Tel Aviv. Nachman Ash () (born 1961) is an Israeli physician who is currently the director-general of the Ministry of Health. Early life and education Nachman Ash was born in 1961. Ronni Gamzu (Hebrew: רוני גמזו, b. January 27, 1966) is an Israeli doctor and professor who since 2015 has been the director of Ichilov Hospital, the country's second largest hospital.
