Friday prayer, or congregational prayer (), is the meeting together of Muslims for communal prayer and service at midday every Friday. Reykjavík Mosque
The Reykjavík Mosque () is a mosque and gathering area for Muslims in Iceland. It is located in the Ármúli district. The mosque was opened in 2002 by the Muslim Association of Iceland after requesting the city government for permission to build a purpose-built mosque in 2000. Services It offers Friday prayers every week and it is also open for all other prayers during the day from Fajr to Isha. In January 2009, a new wooden altar was built by members of the association. Ibrahim Sverrir Agnarsson
Ibrahim Sverrir Agnarsson (born 1948) was the chair of the Muslim Association of Iceland from 2010 to 2015. Biography Ibrahim Sverrir was born in 1948. In 1973 he married María Harðardóttir; they have two sons.Eygló Svala Arnarsdóttir, 'To a Mosque on a Magic Carpet', ''Iceland Review'', 52.1 (2014), 64–68. Ibrahim Sverrir encountered Islam while living as a hippy and working as a horse-trainer for Spaghetti Westerns in Almería in Spain in 1970. Living in an Arab castle, he became interested in the inscriptions on the walls. He travelled to Istanbul, on to Peshawar, bought a horse there and spent some months riding in the mountains of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and China. During this period he converted to Islam. Salmann (Suleiman) Tamimi (; 1 March 1955 – 2 December 2020) was a founding member of the Association Iceland-Palestine (Icelandic: Félagið Ísland-Palestína) and the Association of Muslims in Iceland (Icelandic: Félag múslima á Íslandi). Biography Salmann was born in 1955 in the West Bank and grew up in Wadi El Joz in east Jerusalem. Turkish Abductions
The Turkish Abductions ( ) were a series of slave raids by pirates from Algier and Salé that took place in Iceland in the summer of 1627. The adjectival label "''Turkish''" () does not refer to ethnic Turks, country of Turkey or Turkic peoples in general; at the time it was a general term for all Muslims of the Mediterranean since the majority were from or subjects of the Ottoman Empire. The pirates came from the cities of Algiers and Salé. They raided Grindavík, the East Fjords, and Vestmannaeyjar. About 50 people were killed and close to 400 captured and sold into slavery. A ransom was eventually paid, 9 to 18 years later, for the return of 50 individuals. Raids The 1627 raid was not the first one. In 1607, both Iceland and the Faroe Islands were subjected to a slave raid by the Barbary pirates, who abducted hundreds of people for the slave markets of North Africa.
