Innovations For Poverty Action
Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) is an American non-profit research and policy organization founded in 2002 by economist Dean Karlan. Since its foundation, IPA has worked with over 400 academics to conduct over 900 evaluations in 52 countries. The organization also manages the Poverty Probability Index. IPA conducts randomized controlled trials (RCTs), along with other types of quantitative research, to measure the impacts of development programs in sectors including microfinance, education, health, peace and recovery, governance, agriculture, social protection, and small and medium enterprises. Its partner organizations include over 400 governments, nonprofits, academic institutions, foundations, and companies. Dean Karlan
Dean Karlan is an American development economist and social entrepreneur. He is the Frederic Esser Nemmers Distinguished Professor of Economics and Finance at Northwestern University where, alongside Christopher Udry, he co-directs the Global Poverty Research Lab at the Kellogg School of Management. Karlan served as the chief economist at the United States Agency for International Development from November 15, 2022, until hiresignationon February 25, 2025. Karlan's research focuses on the microeconomics of poverty alleviation in the Developing country, developing world. Randomized Evaluation
A randomized controlled trial (or randomized control trial; RCT) is a form of scientific experiment used to control factors not under direct experimental control. Examples of RCTs are clinical trials that compare the effects of drugs, surgical techniques, medical devices, diagnostic procedures, diets or other medical treatments. Participants who enroll in RCTs differ from one another in known and unknown ways that can influence study outcomes, and yet cannot be directly controlled. By randomly allocating participants among compared treatments, an RCT enables ''statistical control'' over these influences.
