''India Today'' is a weekly Indian English-language news magazine published by Living Media, Living Media India Limited. It is the most widely circulated magazine in India, with a readership of close to 8 million. In 2014, ''India Today'' launched a new online opinion-orientated site called the ''DailyO''. Aroon Purie
Aroon Purie (born 1944) is the founder-publisher and editor-in-chief of ''India Today'', and former chief executive of the India Today Group. He is the managing director of Thomson Press (India) Limited and the chairman and managing director of '' TV Today''. He is a recipient of the Padma Bhushan award. He was also the editor-in-chief of ''Reader's Digest India''. In October 2017, he passed control of the India Today Group to his daughter, Kalli Purie. Early life Purie graduated from The Doon School and earned a bachelor's degree in economics from the London School of Economics in 1965. Bollywood actress Koel Purie is his youngest daughter. Career He started his career in 1970 at Thomson Press as Production Controller and continues to be its guiding force even though he handed over to his son Ankoor Purie. India Today is a 24-hour English language television news channel based in Noida, Uttar Pradesh that carries news, current affairs and business programming in India. The channel is owned by TV Today Network Ltd, which is a part of Living Media. History The channel was launched in 2003 as a sister channel of the Hindi Aaj Tak news channel. It is one of the four news channels from the TV Today Network stable, the others being Aaj Tak, Tez and Delhi Aaj Tak. Alok Verma was brought in as the Executive Producer to successfully launch TV Today group's foray into the English news channel category. Godi media (; ; idiomatic equivalent: 'lapdog media') is a term coined and popularised by veteran Indian journalist Ravish Kumar to describe biased Indian print and TV news media, which has openly supported the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party government since 2014. The term is a pun on the name of Indian prime minister Narendra Modi and has become a common way to refer to television and other media that are perceived as "mouthpieces of the ruling party" (i.e the BJP).
