I Killed Geronimo
''I Killed Geronimo'' is a 1950 American Western film about the Chiricahua Apache leader Geronimo. Directed by John Hoffman and starring James Ellison, Virginia Herrick, and Chief Thundercloud in the role of Geronimo, the film has been described as a "silly but likeable" B movie. It is based around the fictional murder of Geronimo - who in reality died of pneumonia at the age of 80 after a fall from his horse in February 1909, while still a prisoner of the United States at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. John Hoffman (filmmaker)
John Hoffman (29 August 1904, Hungary – 6 January 1980, Altadena, California), was an American editor of montage sequences for several Hollywood studio features. He also directed a number of films, including ''The Wreck of the Hesperus'' and ''Strange Confession''. With his colleague, the Serbian montagist Slavko Vorkapich, Hoffman made two striking visual tone poems, ''Moods of the Sea'' (a.k.a. ''Fingal's Cave'', 1941) and '' Forest Murmurs'' (1947). The former film is set to Felix Mendelssohn's ''Hebrides Overture'' and was restored in 2004 by film preservation expert David Shepard. Sykes "Smith" Ballew (January 21, 1902 – May 2, 1984) was an American actor, sophisticated singer, orchestra leader, and a western singing star. He also was billed as Buddy Blue, Charles Roberts, and Billy Smith. Early years The son of William Young Ballew and his wife, May Elizabeth (Smith) Ballew, he was born in Palestine, Texas in 1902, where he grew up attending local schools. He attended Sherman High School, Austin College and the University of Texas. During his time at Austin College, Ballew and his brother, Charlie, formed the Texasjazzers orchestra. Before that, he organized Jimmie's Joys jazz combo at the university, playing banjo and singing with the group. Career Starting in the late 1920s, he became one of the most recognizable vocalists on hundreds of dance band and jazz records, based in New York City. Eagle-Lion Films was a British-American film production company owned by J. Arthur Rank intended to distribute British productions in the United States. In 1947, it acquired Robert R. Young's PRC Pictures, a small American production company, to produce low-budget features to accompany its British releases. The studio, which was located at 7324 Santa Monica Boulevard (one block away from the Samuel Goldwyn Studios), became a producer of B-movies. Eagle-Lion was also a film distribution company under the name of Eagle-Lion Distributors Limited in the United Kingdom and Eagle-Lion Films Inc. in the United States. In 1954, the film lot was purchased by the Ziv Company for production of its syndicated television programs. It has long since been demolished. History The company was founded in September 1946.
