IFIP WG 2.1
IFIP Working Group 2.1 on Algorithmic Languages and Calculi is a working group of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP). IFIP WG 2.1 was formed as the body responsible for the continued support and maintenance of the programming language ALGOL 60. The ''Modified Report on the Algorithmic Language ALGOL 60'' and the ALGOL 68 programming language were produced by WG 2.1. , its scope is: * Study of calculation of programs from specifications * Design of notations for such calculation * Formulation of algorithm theories, using such notations * Investigation of software support for program derivation * Continuing responsibility for ALGOL 60 and ALGOL 68 History Formation Soon after the publication of the original ''ALGOL 60 Report'' in 1960, issues arose that needed some form of authoritative resolution. International Federation For Information Processing
The International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) is a global organisation for researchers and professionals working in the field of computing to conduct research, develop standards and promote information sharing. Established in 1960 under the auspices of UNESCO, IFIP is recognised by the United Nations and links some 50 national and international societies and academies of science with a total membership of over half a million professionals. IFIP is based in Laxenburg, Austria and is an international, non-governmental organisation that operates on a non-profit basis. Niklaus Wirth
Niklaus Emil Wirth ( IPA: ) (15 February 1934 – 1 January 2024) was a Swiss computer scientist. He designed several programming languages, including Pascal, and pioneered several classic topics in software engineering. In 1984, he won the Turing Award, generally recognized as the highest distinction in computer science, "for developing a sequence of innovative computer languages". Early life and education Niklaus Emil Wirth was born in Winterthur, Switzerland, on 15 February 1934. He was the son of Hedwig (née Keller) and Walter Wirth, a high school teacher. Wirth studied electronic engineering at the Federal Institute of Technology, Zürich (ETH Zürich) from 1954 to 1958, graduating with a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree. Andrey Petrovich Yershov (; 19 April 1931, Moscow – 8 December 1988, Moscow) was a Soviet computer scientist, notable as a pioneer in systems programming and programming language research. Donald Knuth considers him to have independently co-discovered the idea of hashing with linear probing. He also created one of the first algorithms for compiling arithmetic expressions. Robert Berriedale Keith Dewar (21 June 1945 – 30 June 2015) was an American computer scientist and educator. He helped to develop programming languages and compilers and was an outspoken advocate of freely licensed open-source software. He was a cofounder, CEO, and president of the AdaCore software company. He was also an enthusiastic amateur performer and musician, especially with the Village Light Opera Group in New York City. John Darlington
John Darlington is a British academic, researcher and author. He is an emeritus professor at Imperial College London. He was director of the London e-Science Centre and was head of the Functional Programming and Social Computing Sections at Imperial. Darlington is known for the early work he did on program transformation and functional programming. In his thesis in 1972, Darlington popularized the idea of program transformation, i.e. manipulating programs into alternative forms, preserving their semantics while altering their operational characteristics. Roland Carl Backhouse (born 18 August 1948) is a British computer scientist and mathematician. , he is Emeritus Professor of Computing Science at the University of Nottingham.
