Hvar (town)
Hvar (Chakavian: ''For'', el, Φάρος, Pharos, la, Pharus and , it, Lesina) is a town and port on the island of Hvar, part of Split-Dalmatia County, Croatia. The municipality has a population of 4,251 (2011) while the town itself is inhabited by 3,771 people, making it the largest settlement on the island of Hvar. It is situated on a bay in the south coast of the island, opposite from the other nearby towns of Stari Grad and Jelsa. The town of Hvar has a long and distinguished history as center for trade and culture in the Adriatic. A commune, part of the Venetian Empire during the 13th to 18th centuries, it was an important naval base with a strong fortress above, encircling the town walls and protecting the port. Cultural life thrived as prosperity grew, and Hvar is the site of one of the oldest surviving theatres in Europe, opened in 1612. Sveta Nedilja
Sveta Nedjelja also known as Sveta Nedilja (Chakavian dialect: ''Sveta Nedija''), is a small village on the Croatian island of Hvar. It is located near the town of Hvar and it has 131 residents (2011). History Sveta Nedjelja lies on a sheer cliff at the foot of ''Sv. Nikola'' (St. Nicholas; 626 metres) the highest peak of the island, below a cave which was inhabited back in the Neolithic. The cave served as the site for an Augustinian monastery in the Middle Ages. The monastery, which existed from the 15th century to 1787, was built in a large opening of the cave where there is also a spring. Today, only the monastery church and a part of a shell of a house are preserved. The village, which lies half way to the cave, is reached from the sea by a winding path which snakes up through pine woods. A new church was built in the village this century. Korčula (, it, Curzola) is a Croatian island in the Adriatic Sea. It has an area of , is long and on average wide, and lies just off the Dalmatian coast. Pakleni Islands
The Pakleni () or sometimes referred as Paklinski () islands are located off the southwest coast of the island of Hvar, Croatia, opposite the entrance to the Hvar (city) harbour. Usual local name is Škoji, which means ''Islands''. The name is popularly translated as ''Hells' islands'' (pakleni: hellish), but it originally derives from ''paklina'', an archaic word, from which ''pakleni'' is derived. too. Hvar Arsenal
The Hvar Arsenal is a historic building in the town of Hvar, Croatia. It was first constructed in the 14th century as a maintenance shipyard for the galley of the commune. Through the ages it was further expanded and gained additional functions. Most notable is the historic theater (), built in 1612 as part of the first floor, above the galley space. Today it is a multi-functional building centered on the theater. History The Arsenal in Hvar has developed and changed in accordance with the historical, social and technological changes of its day. It was first built in the period between 1292 (the decision to build) and 1331 (its existence confirmed).
