Arnold Houbraken
Arnold Houbraken (28 March 1660 – 14 October 1719) was a Dutch painter and writer from Dordrecht, now remembered mainly as a biographer of Dutch Golden Age painters. Life Houbraken was sent first to learn ''threadtwisting'' (Twyndraat) from Johannes de Haan, who introduced him to engraving. After two years he then studied art with Willem van Drielenburch, who he was with during the rampjaar, the year 1672. He then studied 9 months with Jacobus Leveck and finally, four years with Samuel van Hoogstraten. In 1685 he married Sara Sasbout, and around 1709 he moved from Dordrecht to Amsterdam. Arnold Houbraken painted mythological and religious paintings, portraits and landscapes. He is best known for the art historical work '' The Great Theatre of Dutch Painters'' (1718–1721). Antonina Houbraken
Antonina Houbraken (30 May 1686 – December 1736) was an 18th-century Dutch draughtswoman who is known for her many topographical drawings of Dutch sites. She also drew landscapes. She is recorded as a skilled portraitist. Life Antonina Houbraken was born on 30 May 1686 and baptized on 31 May 1686 in Dordrecht in the Dutch Republic. She was the daughter of painter and writer Arnold Houbraken and sister of the printmaker Jacob Houbraken. It is assumed she learned to draw in her father's workshop. She married Jacobus Stellingwerff in May 1723. Her husband was a draughtsman who provided topographical drawings to Brouërius van Nidek, a lawyer who was undertaking a project to map the entire Dutch Republic. For this purpose he collected topographical drawings. Stellingwerff also made topographical drawings for the albums of Andries and Gerrit Schoemaker, collectors of topographical prints and drawings. Jacobus Houbraken
Jacobus Houbraken (25 December 1698 – 14 November 1780) was a Dutch engraver and the son of the artist and biographer Arnold Houbraken (1660–1719), whom he assisted in producing a published record of the lives of artists from the Dutch Golden Age. Biography Jacobus was born in Dordrecht, and learned the art of engraving from his father. In 1707 he moved to Amsterdam, where for years he helped his father with his ''magnum opus'', his art historical work ''The Great Theatre of Dutch Painters'' (1718–1721). When his father died he assisted his mother with the last proofs of the manuscript before publishing. With this project he started his portraits of Netherlandish celebrities, that are today in many cases the ''only'' likenesses left of these people. He was influenced by studying the works of Cornelis Cort, Jonas Suyderhoef, Gerard Edelinck and the Visschers. He died, aged 81, in Amsterdam. Joannes Van Houbraken
Joannes, Jan or Giovanni van Houbraken, van Houbracken or Houbraken (c. 1600 – ) was a Flemish painter and art dealer. He painted religious compositions and allegorical genre scenes. He lived and worked for a while in Italy, first in Rome, later in Naples and finally in Messina. He became familiar with the work of the Caravaggisti, whose style influenced him.
