Rom Houben is a comatose Belgian man who was claimed to have the ability to type through facilitated communication, a scientifically discredited technique. Houben was comatose and in a vegetative state for 23 years after a near-fatal automobile accident, but whom according to several of his caregivers, was conscious and paralyzed during the entirety of his hospital stay. In 2010, the claim that Houben was able to communicate was rejected when communication could not be replicated with a different facilitator and by hiding the object to be identified from the view of the facilitator. Heinrich Hubert Maria Josef Houben (27 October 1875, in Waldfeucht (Rheinland) Germany – 28 June 1940, in Tübingen) was a German chemist. He made achievements within ketone synthesis, terpenes, and camphor studies. After being wounded several times on the front lines in World War I, Houben was made head of the war laboratory. He improved the Hoesch reaction which is now normally called Houben-Hoesch reaction. Houben organized and made a major rework of the book Methods of Organic Chemistry which is now referred to as Houben-Weyl Methods of Organic Chemistry. Life Houben studied at the University of Bonn and changed his subjects from mathematics and astronomy to chemistry under the influence of August Kekulé. He received his Ph.D. for work with Julius Bredt in 1898, and they collaborated on the initial 1902 publication of what became known as Bredt's Rule. Max Houben (5 May 1898 – 10 February 1949) was a Belgian versatile athlete who competed from the early 1920s until his death at the 1949 FIBT World Championships. He won a silver medal in the four-man bobsled event at the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, and was the oldest medalist at the Winter Olympics (48 years, 278 days) until Canadian Russ Howard won a gold medal in men's curling at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin (50 years, 7 days). Hubert Houben (24 February 1898 – 9 November 1956) was a German sprinter who competed at the 1928 Summer Olympics. He won a silver medal in the 4 × 100 m relay, together with Georg Lammers, Richard Corts and Helmut Körnig, and failed to reach the final of individual 100 m event. Houben played football and trained in gymnastics and swimming before changing to sprint running. On 16 August 1924 he won the 100 m event at the Germany-United States meet, defeating Olympic champions Loren Murchison and Charley Paddock. He missed the 1924 Olympics, as Germany was banned from those Games because of its role in World War I. In the 4 × 100 m relay final at the 1928 Olympics the German team was leading the race, but Houben and Körnig had to slow down to avoid a faulty exchange. Henri Houben (1858–1931, born and died in Antwerp) was a Belgian genre painter. Life He originally studied to be a violinist, but his interest in painting took the upper hand, so he enrolled at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Antwerp, where he studied under Charles Verlat. He later assisted Verlat with his panoramic paintings ("March of the Russian Army" and "The Battle of Waterloo") and executed decorative paintings from designs by Albrecht De Vriendt in the Antwerp City Hall. In 1885, he became a Professor at the Academy. In Belgium, he worked primarily in Antwerp and the Kempen. Stijn Houben (born 5 April 1995) is a Dutch footballer who plays for Hoofdklasse club VOC as a central defender. Club career Houben started his career at HBS-Craeyenhout, one of the Netherlands' oldest clubs and at that time playing in the Topklasse, the third level of Dutch football. Frank Johannes Maria Houben is the former Queen's Commissioner for the Netherlands, Dutch province of North Brabant in between 22 April 1987 and 1 October 2003, when he retired after 16 years of service for Beatrix of the Netherlands. His successor was Hanja Maij-Weggen. Previously he was burgemeester, mayor of Luyksgestel, Vessem, Wintelre en Knegsel, and Etten-Leur. On 20 September 2003 the mayors of the province of North Brabant planted trees in Houben Forest as a tribute to his work.
