Hollands Kroon is a municipality located in the Northwest Netherlands. As of 24 March 2022, there are 344 municipalities ( nl, gemeenten) and three special municipalities () in the Netherlands. The latter is the status of three of the six island territories that make up the Dutch Caribbean. Municipalities are the second-level administrative division, or public bodies (), in the Netherlands and are subdivisions of their respective provinces. Their duties are delegated to them by the central government and they are ruled by a municipal council that is elected every four years. Wieringermeer
Wieringermeer () is a former municipality and a polder in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. Since 2012 Wieringermeer has been a part of the new municipality of Hollands Kroon. Population centres The former municipality of Wieringermeer consisted of the following cities, towns, villages and/or districts: Kreileroord, Middenmeer, Slootdorp, Wieringerwerf. History Around the year 1000 AD, this area was land. However, several storms after 1100 flooded the land, turning it into a flood plain. Wieringmeer means "Wieringen Lake", the name of an inland lake that filled the area in the early medieval period. The Wieringmeerpolder is a polder, newly created land, and part of the Zuiderzee Works developed in the 20th century. The creation of this polder started in 1927. Kolhorn ( West Frisian: ''Klòrre(n)'') is a village in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Hollands Kroon, and lies about east of Schagen. Hippolytushoef
Hippolytushoef, abbreviated locally as Hippo, is a town in the western Netherlands, located in the municipality of Hollands Kroon, North Holland, 14 km east of Den Helder. History The village was first mentioned in 1343 or 1344 as "van Ypolshove", and is a combination of "farmland" and Hippolytus of Rome. Hippolytushoef was the main village of the former island Wieringen and originates in the 12th century. The Dutch Reformed church is a single aisled church with a large tower with brick spire. The tower dates from the 13th century and the spire was added in the 15th century. In 1674, the church was destroyed and rebuilt the next year. In 1893, the choir collapsed and was rebuilt 1895 by Joseph Cuypers. Hippolytushoef was home to 340 people in 1840. Den Oever
Den Oever (; in English, the ''shore, the coast'') is a village in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Hollands Kroon, and lies about east of Den Helder. Overview The village was first mentioned in 1432 as "ten Oisterlande op 't Oever", and means "(on the sea) shore", because it was an access point to the former Zuiderzee. Den Oever was a fishing village which developed in the Late Middle Ages on the north-eastern edge of the former Wieringen island. The village is located on the former island Wieringen at the west side of the Afsluitdijk: therefore the Stevin lock (named after mathematician and engineer Simon Stevin) and three series of five sluices for discharging the IJsselmeer into the Wadden Sea were constructed in Den Oever. De Haukes is a hamlet in the Dutch province of North Holland. Breezand is a village in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Hollands Kroon, which is known for its flower bulbs, and lies about 7 km southeast of Den Helder. Winkel, North Holland
Winkel is a village in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Hollands Kroon, and lies about 11 km north of Heerhugowaard. History The village was first mentioned in 1289 as Winckele, and means "enclosed piece of land". Winkel developed in the Middle Ages as a peat excavation settlement. It was largely destroyed in 1519, and suffered a fire in 1649. The Dutch Reformed church is an aisleless with needle spire in a neoclassic style. It was built 1845 as a replacement for the medieval church. The tower was rebuilt in 1867. The Kremlin is a garden with follies some of which are over tall. Winkel was home to 660 people in 1840. It was a separate municipality until 1970, when it was merged with Niedorp.
