The Seattle Mariners are an American professional baseball team based in Seattle, Washington. Enfranchised in 1977, the Mariners are a member of the Western Division of Major League Baseball's American League. Safeco Field, now T-Mobile Park has been the Mariners' home ballpark since July . From their 1977 inception until June 1999, the club's home park was the Kingdome. 1965–1976: Origins and formation Before being awarded a team in Major League Baseball, Seattle had been a staple of the Pacific Coast League minor league dating back to the late 19th century. The first attempt to land a major league team failed when a bid by William Daley to move the Cleveland Indians to Seattle in fell apart. In late 1967, Daley, by then having sold the Indians, led a consortium to win a franchise in the expansion. That team became the Seattle Pilots. The Seattle Mariners are an American professional baseball team based in Seattle. They compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) West division. The team joined the American League as an expansion team in 1977 playing their home games in the Kingdome. Since July , the Mariners' home ballpark has been T-Mobile Park, located in the SoDo neighborhood of Seattle. The "Mariners" name originates from the prominence of marine culture in the city of Seattle. They are nicknamed the M's, a title featured in their primary logo from 1987 to 1992. They adopted their current team colors – navy blue, northwest green ( teal), and silver – prior to the 1993 season, after having been royal blue and gold since the team's inception.
