Himalayan Mountaineering Institute
The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI Darjeeling) was established in Darjeeling, India on 4 November 1954 to encourage mountaineering as an organized sport in India. The first ascent of Mount Everest in 1953 by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary sparked a keen interest in establishing mountaineering as a well-respected endeavour for people in the region. With the impetus provided by the first prime minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, HMI was established in Darjeeling. Narendra Dhar Jayal, the pioneer of Indian Mountaineering, was the founding principal of the institute. Tenzing Norgay was the first director of field training for HMI. The buildings for the Institute were designed by the architect Joseph Allen Stein, then teaching at the Bengal Engineering College near Calcutta. Darjeeling
Darjeeling (, , ) is a town and municipality in the northernmost region of the Indian state of West Bengal. Located in the Eastern Himalayas, it has an average elevation of . To the west of Darjeeling lies the easternmost province of Nepal, to the east the Kingdom of Bhutan, to the north the Indian state of Sikkim, and farther north the Tibet Autonomous Region region of China. Malavath Purna
Malavath Poorna (born 10 June 2000) is an Indian mountaineer. On 25 May 2014, Poorna climbed Mount Everest, aged 13 years and 11 months, the youngest Indian and the youngest female to have reached the summit. Purna climbed Mount Elbrus, the highest peak in Russia and Europe on 27 July 2017. After reaching the summit of Elbrus, Poorna unfurled a 50 ft long Indian Tricolor and sang the Indian National Anthem. She completed the Seven Summits on 5 June 2022 climbing Mount Denali, along with father-daughter duo Ajeet Bajaj and Deeya Bajaj. Satyarup Siddhanta
Satyarup Siddhanta (born 29 April 1983) is a Bangalore-based Indian Mountaineering, mountaineer. Satyarup became the youngest mountaineer in the world and the first from India to climb both the Seven Summits as well as Volcanic Seven Summits on 15 January 2019 at 10:10 pm Chile time. Guinness World Records approved this claim. On 15 December 2017 he summited Vinson Massif, becoming only the fifth Indian civilian to complete the seven summits (Messner's List and Bass List). Harshvardhan Joshi
Harshvardhan Joshi (born 13 November 1995) is an Indian mountaineer and sustainability advocate from Vasai, Maharashtra. He has climbed six mountains of 6000 meters and above in his mountaineering career which started in 2016. Joshi reached the summit of Mount Everest on 23 May 2021 in a carbon neutral effort. Early life Joshi was born in Vasai, Maharashtra, and schooled in his native village. He graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in IT from Mumbai University. Archana Sardana is India's first female BASE jumper. She is a certified skydiver and was the first person to skydive with the Indian flag in the United States of America. Sardana has done 335 skydives and 45 BASE jumps across the globe. She is also the first Indian to BASE Jump offof the KL Tower, Malaysia with the Indian Flag.
