Heritage Corridor Line
The Heritage Corridor (HC) is a Metra commuter rail line in Chicago, Illinois, and its southwestern suburbs, terminating in Joliet, Illinois. While Metra does not refer to its lines by colors, the Heritage Corridor appears on Metra timetables as "Alton Maroon," after the Alton Railroad, which ran trains on this route. The name Heritage Corridor refers to the Illinois and Michigan Canal Heritage Corridor. Established in 1984, it runs parallel to the line. Unlike other Metra lines, the Heritage Corridor runs during weekday rush hours only in the peak direction–to Chicago in the morning and Joliet in the afternoon. The Heritage Corridor takes less than 1 hour to reach Joliet, significantly faster than the Rock Island District which also serves Joliet. However, with the Fair Transit South Cook pilot program cutting Rock Island fares, a ticket from Joliet to Union Station via the Heritage Corridor is more expensive than a ticket from Joliet to on the Rock Island District. Commuter rail, or suburban rail, is a passenger rail transport service that primarily operates within a metropolitan area, connecting Commuting, commuters to a Downtown, central city from adjacent suburbs or commuter towns. Summit (Amtrak Station)
Summit is an Amtrak and Metra train station in Summit, Illinois. It is served by Amtrak Illinois' ''Lincoln Service'', which operates daily, and Metra's Heritage Corridor commuter line, which operates only during morning and evening rush hours in peak direction. Amtrak's ''Texas Eagle'' trains also use these tracks but do not stop. It is away from Union Station, the northern terminus of the line. In Metra's zone-based fare system, Summit is in zone C. Summit is also the closest Metra (and Amtrak) station to Midway Airport. Summit is the only Metra station that is served by more Amtrak trains (four trains per direction throughout the day) than by Metra trains (three inbound morning and three outbound evening rush hour trains). The ''Wolverine'' is a higher-speed passenger train service operated by Amtrak as part of its Michigan Services. The line provides three daily round-trips between Chicago and Pontiac, Michigan, via Ann Arbor and Detroit. It carries a heritage train name descended from the New York Central (Michigan Central). Hiawatha Service
The ''Hiawatha Service'', or simply ''Hiawatha'', is an 86-mile (138 km) train route operated by Amtrak on the western shore of Lake Michigan between Chicago, Illinois and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. However, the name was historically applied to several different routes that extended across the Midwest and to the Pacific Ocean. As of 2007, twelve to fourteen trains (seven round-trips, six on Sunday) run daily between Chicago and Milwaukee, making intermediate stops in Glenview, Illinois, Sturtevant, Wisconsin, and Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport. The line is partially supported by funds from the state governments of Wisconsin and Illinois. The line utilizes the Soo Line Railroad (Canadian Pacific) C&M Subdivision. The ''Southwest Chief'' (formerly the ''Southwest Limited'' and ''Super Chief'') is a passenger train operated by Amtrak on a route between Chicago and Los Angeles through the Midwest and Southwest via Kansas City, Albuquerque, and Flagstaff. Amtrak bills the route as one of its most scenic, with views of the Painted Desert and the Red Cliffs of Sedona, as well as the plains of Iowa, Kansas, and Colorado. The ''Lake Shore Limited'' is an overnight Amtrak intercity passenger train that runs between Chicago and either New York City or Boston via two sections east of Albany. The train began service in 1975; its predecessor was Amtrak's Chicago–New York '' Lake Shore'', which operated during 1971–72. The ''Capitol Limited'' is a daily Amtrak train between Washington, D.C., and Chicago, running via Pittsburgh and Cleveland. Service began in 1981 and was named after the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad's ''Capitol Limited'' which ended in 1971 upon the formation of Amtrak.
