Henry Bower (chemist)
Reverend Henry Bower (1812–1885) was an Anglo-Indian missionary of the Society of the Propagation of the Gospel who was known for his scholarship over Tamil. Early life Bower was born in 1812 in an Anglo-Indian family in Madras. He was educated at the Vepery (formerly Veperi) seminary. After completing his schooling, he was employed as a catechist by the Wesleyan Missionary Society. In 1838, he was appointed Assistant Missionary in the Madras mission. Bower was ordained deacon in 1843 and priest in 1845. Bower preached at Tanjore from 1844 to 1846, Vediarpuram from 1846 to 1857, Madras from 1857 to 1875 and 1878 to 1884 and Kumbakonam from 1875 to 1878. Writings At an early stage in his life, Bower attained mastery over Tamil. He was the principal Tamil examiner of the University of Madras. Anglo-Indian
Anglo-Indian people fall into two different groups: those with mixed Indian and British ancestry, and people of British descent born or residing in India. The latter sense is now mainly historical, but confusions can arise. The '' Oxford English Dictionary'', for example, gives ''three'' possibilities: "Of mixed British and Indian parentage, of Indian descent but born or living in Britain or (chiefly historical) of English descent or birth but living or having lived long in India". United Society Partners in the Gospel (USPG) is a United Kingdom-based charitable organization (registered charity no. 234518). It was first incorporated under Royal Charter in 1701 as the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (SPG) as a high church missionary organization of the Church of England and was active in the Thirteen Colonies of North America. The group was renamed in 1965 as the United Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (USPG) after incorporating the activities of the Universities' Mission to Central Africa (UMCA). In 1968 the Cambridge Mission to Delhi also joined the organization. From November 2012 until 2016, the name was United Society or Us. In 2016, it was announced that the Society would return to the name USPG, this time standing for United Society Partners in the Gospel, from 25 August 2016. Tamil (; ' , ) is a Dravidian language natively spoken by the Tamil people of South Asia. Vepery
Vepery is a suburb in the north of Chennai, India. Abutting the transportation hub of Park Town, the neighbourhood covers a rectangular area north of the Poonamallee High Road. History Vepery is among those oldest neighbourhoods developed during the British settlement in the city of Madras. Christian missionaries started arriving in the neighbourhood as early as 1749, soon after the treaty of Aix la Chapelle when the city was restored to the English from the French. The Vepery Mission is the oldest mission connected with the Church of England in India. In 1828, St. Matthias Church was built, making it the second oldest Anglican Church after St. Mary's Church at Fort St. George. Kumbakonam
Kumbakonam (formerly spelt as Coombaconum or Combaconum) or Kudanthai is a city municipal corporation in the Thanjavur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located from Thanjavur and from Chennai and is the headquarters of the Kumbakonam taluk of Thanjavur district. It is the second largest city in the district after Thanjavur. Palayamkottai (also Palayankottai) is a neighbourhood in Tirunelveli City, incorporated within the Tirunelveli City Municipal Corporation. It is situated on the east bank of the Thamirabarani river, with the exception of its downtown area, which is present on the west bank. Etymology The region ''Palayamkottai'' in Tamil is a portmanteau of '''palayam''', which refers to a settlement, and kottai','' which translates to a fort.
