Hemsworth Grammar School
Outwood Academy Hemsworth, known previously as Hemsworth Arts and Community Academy and Hemsworth Arts and Community College, is a mixed secondary school and sixth form located in Hemsworth in the City of Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England. The school is operated by Outwood Grange Academies Trust, and the principal Toby Rutter. History The school was opened in 1921, set up by the West Riding County Council's Education Committee and known as Hemsworth Grammar School. (It is not to be confused with Archbishop Holgate's grammar school, founded in Hemsworth in 1546 which moved to Barnsley in 1888.) It was renamed Hemsworth High School when the school became comprehensive. In 2001 the school gained specialist status as an Arts College and was renamed Hemsworth Arts and Community College. Academy (English School)
An academy school in England is a state-funded school which is directly funded by the Department for Education and independent of local authority control. The terms of the arrangements are set out in individual Academy Funding Agreements. Most academies are secondary schools, though slightly more than 25% of primary schools (4,363 as of December 2017) are academies. The A-Level (Advanced Level) is a subject-based qualification conferred as part of the General Certificate of Education, as well as a school leaving qualification offered by the educational bodies in the United Kingdom and the educational authorities of British Crown dependencies to students completing secondary or pre-university education. Leonard Parkin
Leonard Parkin (2 June 1929 – 20 September 1993) was a British television journalist and newscaster who worked for both the BBC and ITN. Born in Thurnscoe, West Riding of Yorkshire, he was educated at Hemsworth Grammar School, Yorkshire. He worked as a reporter on the BBC's '' Panorama'' for many years before joining ITN, initially as a reporter but later as a newscaster for ITV's main early evening bulletins in the 1970s. In November 1963, he was deputy correspondent for the BBC in Washington and his Radio Newsreel report on the assassination of John F. Kennedy is a historic recording. Between 1976 and 1987 he was, along with Peter Sissons, one of the main presenters for ITN's '' News at One'', and often hosted the '' News at 5:45'' in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Jeffrey Ennis (born 13 November 1952) is a British Labour Party politician, who was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Barnsley East and Mexborough from 1996 to 2010, having been first elected at the Barnsley East by-election. Early life and education Ennis was born in Grimethorpe, near Barnsley in the West Riding of Yorkshire, the son of a coal miner and educated at the Hemsworth Grammar School on Station Road before attending the Redland Teachers Training College near Bristol where he was awarded a Bachelor of Education degree in 1975. Phil Bull (9 April 1910 – 11 June 1989), born West Yorkshire, England, was a professional gambler, racehorse owner and publisher, who founded the Timeform private handicapping system for British horseracing. Since 1948, Timeform have produced performance ratings for every racehorse in Great Britain and, increasingly, internationally. Timeform ratings have become adopted as the British horseracing industry's unofficial, but authoritative, measure of racehorse performance. It was said of Bull in 1976 that "there is no more familiar figure on English racecourses than the stocky, bearded one of Mr Phil Bull". Geoffrey Boycott
Sir Geoffrey Boycott (born 21 October 1940) is a former Test cricketer, who played cricket for Yorkshire and England. In a prolific and sometimes controversial playing career from 1962 to 1986, Boycott established himself as one of England's most successful opening batsmen, a dogged grafter. Sir Derek Birley (31 May 1926 – 14 May 2002) was a distinguished English educationalist and a prize-winning writer on the social history of sport, particularly cricket.
