Green Day
Green Day is an American rock band formed in the East Bay of California in 1987 by lead vocalist and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, together with bassist and backing vocalist Mike Dirnt. For most of the band's career, they have been a power trio with drummer Tré Cool, who replaced John Kiffmeyer in 1990 before the recording of the band's second studio album, '' Kerplunk'' (1991). Touring guitarist Jason White became a full-time member in 2012, but returned to his touring role in 2016. Before taking its current name in 1989, Green Day was called Sweet Children, and they were part of the late 1980s/early 1990s Bay Area punk scene that emerged from the 924 Gilman Street club in Berkeley, California. The band's early releases were with the independent record label Lookout! Records. In 1994, their major-label debut '' Dookie'', released through Reprise Records, became a breakout success and eventually shipped over 10 million copies in the U.S. Alongside fellow Califor ...

Billboard (magazine)
''Billboard'' (stylized as ''billboard'') is an American music and entertainment magazine published weekly by Penske Media Corporation. The magazine provides music charts, news, video, opinion, reviews, events, and style related to the music industry. Its music charts include the Hot 100, the 200, and the Global 200, tracking the most popular albums and songs in different genres of music. It also hosts events, owns a publishing firm, and operates several TV shows. ''Billboard'' was founded in 1894 by William Donaldson and James Hennegan as a trade publication for bill posters. Donaldson later acquired Hennegan's interest in 1900 for $500. In the early years of the 20th century, it covered the entertainment industry, such as circuses, fairs, and burlesque shows, and also created a mail service for travelling entertainers. ''Billboard'' began focusing more on the music industry as the jukebox, phonograph, and radio became commonplace. Many topics it covered were spun-of ...

Island In The Sun (Weezer Song)
"Island in the Sun" is a song by the American rock band Weezer. It is the second single from the band's second self-titled album ''Weezer'', released in 2001. "Island in the Sun" was not originally planned to be on the album, but producer Ric Ocasek fought for its inclusion. It was a successful radio single and perhaps the band's biggest hit ever outside of the United States, reaching No. 31 in the UK and No. 17 in France. In January 2002, the Australian Triple J Hottest 100 ranked the song 7 in its 2001 countdown. "Island in the Sun" is also the most-licensed track in the Weezer catalog. In 2009, ''Pitchfork'' named it the 495th greatest song of the 2000s. In late 2001, the band reworked the song's solo for their live show. In 2005, lead singer Rivers Cuomo would often open the band's encore by playing "Island in the Sun" alone on an acoustic guitar in the back of the venue they were playing. The song is much lighter than the album's first single, "Hash Pipe." It is also a bo ...

El Scorcho
"El Scorcho" is a song by the American alternative rock band Weezer. It is the first single from the band's second album, '' Pinkerton'', released in 1996. The music video features the band playing in an old ballroom in Los Angeles (as revealed by Weezer's '' Video Capture Device'' DVD), surrounded by light fixtures of diverse origin, flashing in time to the music. The name of the song supposedly came from a packet of hot sauce from Del Taco, labeled "Del Scorcho". The track failed commercially; several radio stations refused to play the song, and the video was not played on MTV. This is considered to be one of the causes for the initial commercial failure of the album. It was, however, extremely popular in Australia, and made it to #9 on the ''Triple J Hottest 100 chart'', the national poll conducted by alternative rock station Triple J for the year's most popular alternative songs. It was subsequently released on the 1996 ''Triple J Hottest 100'' ''compilation''. The song is ...

"Undone – The Sweater Song" is a song by the American alternative rock band Weezer, released on the band's self-titled 1994 debut album. It was released as their debut single in 1994. Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo has commented on the song, saying: Cuomo has also said that it was his attempt at writing "a Velvet Underground-type song," but later referred to the song as an inadvertent rip-off of Metallica's " Welcome Home (Sanitarium)", with the band's metal roots showing through. Overview Originally, the band intended to insert various sound clips into the song, but were wary of the cost of licensing them. Instead, the studio version of the song features a spoken introduction by then bassist Matt Sharp and longtime friend of the band Karl Koch, as well as an "intermission" set of dialogue between Karl and one of the founding members of Weezer's official fan club and early supporter of the band, Mykel Allan. This dialogue is frequently ad-libbed during concerts and other live r ...

My Name Is Jonas
"My Name Is Jonas" is a song by the American rock band Weezer. It is the first track on the band's self-titled 1994 debut album, also known as ''The Blue Album''. It was written by guitarist/vocalist Rivers Cuomo, drummer Patrick Wilson and guitarist Jason Cropper, and produced by Ric Ocasek. Cropper wrote the song's acoustic intro; it is one of his only Weezer songwriting credits, as he left the band before the release of its first album. Background The song was inspired by Cuomo's brother, who was having insurance problems after a serious car crash while at college. According to Cuomo, the song "explains how The Plan is reaming us all, especially my brother." "My Name Is Jonas" was written in the key of B major. However, as the song is played with guitars tuned a half-step down, it is played as if it were in the key of C. The song features Stephanie Eitel of Agent Sparks on the chorus on backup vocals, performing the "gimme, gimme" hook. Background Rivers Cuomo's story behind "Beverly Hills": "I was at the opening of the new Hollywood Bowl and I flipped through the program and I saw a picture of Wilson Phillips. And for some reason I just thought how nice it would be to marry, like, an 'established' celebrity and live in Beverly Hills and be part of that world. And it was a totally sincere desire. And then I wrote that song, Beverly Hills. For some reason, by the time it came out—and the video came out—it got twisted around into something that seemed sarcastic. But originally it wasn't meant to be sarcastic at all." Cuomo stated that "Beverly Hills" and the solo, third verse, and last chorus of "Falling fo ...

Hash Pipe
"Hash Pipe" is a song by American rock band Weezer. Released in 2001, it was the first single off the band's third album ''Weezer'' (''The Green Album''), and the only one of the Summer Songs of 2000 songs to make it onto the album, although "Dope Nose" and "Slob" were released on ''Maladroit''. Background According to an interview with Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo, "Hash Pipe" was written on the same night as the song "Dope Nose" off ''Maladroit''. The story goes that Cuomo took "a bunch of Ritalin and had like three shots of tequila," paced around for a while, then wrote both songs. Weezer drummer Patrick Wilson is featured on the cover of the song's CD single. Since late 2001, the band has played the song live with a reworked guitar solo that no longer follows the verse melody. The song is about a transsexual prostitute. Composition With a tempo of 128 bpm, "Hash Pipe" is composed in the key of A minor. The opening line, "I can't help my feelings, I go out of my mind", i ...

Composition ''Rolling Stone'' described "Hero" as an outcast anthem, which focuses on frontman Rivers Cuomo's feelings of inadequacy. The band described the song as for "the stay at home dreamers, the zoom graduators, the sourdough bakers, and the essential workers". Following the style of ''Van Weezer''s return to the band's roots in hard rock, "Hero" has been described musically as an upbeat Weezer song with heavy guitar usage. '' Spin'' described it as "a dose of power pop". On July 30, the band released an alternate version of the song titled "Hero (Piano)", arranged as a piano ballad. Music video The music video for the song was directed by Brendan Walter and Jasper Graham. It begins with a scene of Cuomo writing a letter, which is then seen passed along Weezer fans, accompanied with footage of the band performing t ...
