The Hawai River is a river of New Zealand. It flows from the Raukumara Range northeast into the Bay of Plenty. The locality of Tōrere is southwest of the river mouth, and Houpoto is northeast. The Bay of Plenty ( mi, Te Moana-a-Toi) is a region of New Zealand, situated around a bight of the same name in the northern coast of the North Island. The bight stretches 260 km from the Coromandel Peninsula in the west to Cape Runaway in the east. The Bay of Plenty Region, governed by the Bay of Plenty Regional Council, incorporates several large islands in the bay, in addition to the mainland area. Called ''Te Moana-a-Toi'' (the Sea of Toi) in the Māori language after Toi, an early ancestor, the name 'Bay of Plenty' was bestowed by James Cook in 1769 when he noticed the abundant food supplies at several Māori villages there, in stark contrast to observations he had made earlier in Poverty Bay. Tōrere
Tōrere, previously known as Torere, is a small settlement in the Ōpōtiki District of the Bay of Plenty Region on New Zealand's North Island. It is the ancestral home of the Ngāitai people. One of the area's largest businesses is Torere Macadamias, an organic-macadamia farm established on land not suited to other forms of agriculture. The farm featured on '' Country Calendar'' in 2017. Macadamia research from the farm has been presented at the University of Hawaii. The farm is now a major global producer of macadamias and related products. History Tōrere was one of the earliest places visited by the ''Tainui'' migratory waka. Traditional histories tell of Tōrere-nui-ā-rua, eldest daughter of Hoturoa, disembarking from the waka to get away from the advances of a man on the canoe.
