Harry Cruse
Harry Cruse (born 1840/1) was an American politician who served as state representative, state senator, and public official in Florida. He served in the Florida State Senate from 1869 until 1870. He represented Gadsden County in the Florida House of Representatives during the Reconstruction era from 1871 until 1874 and in 1877. He was accused in testimony of being appointed to a patronage position as a timber agent and not doing any work as such. He testified about bribery allegations against state senator C. H. Pearce. He is described as having been allied with Marcellus Lovejoy Stearns. Gadsden County
Gadsden County is a county located in the panhandle of the U.S. state of Florida. As of the 2020 census, the population was 43,826. Its county seat is Quincy. Gadsden County is included in the Tallahassee, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. Gadsden County is the only majority (over 50%) African-American county in Florida. Marcellus Lovejoy Stearns
Marcellus Lovejoy Stearns (April 29, 1839 – December 8, 1891) was an American politician who served as the 11th Governor of Florida from 1874 to 1877 during the Reconstruction Era. Originally from Maine, he also served in the Union Army during the American Civil War, losing an arm, and served in Florida's 1868 constitutional convention and in the Florida House of Representatives, including time as speaker. Born in Lovell in Oxford County in southwestern Maine, he attended Waterville College in Waterville, Maine (which later became Colby College). In 1861, he joined the Union Army and lost an arm during the Battle of Opequon in Winchester, Virginia, after which the Army sent him to study law. He was assigned to Quincy in Gadsden County in the Florida Panhandle, where he remained after his discharge from the military.
