Harry Brookes Allen
Sir Harry Brookes Allen (13 June 1854 – 28 March 1926) was a noted Australian pathologist. Education Harry Brookes Allen was born at Geelong, Victoria, the son of Thomas Watts Allen. He was educated at Flinders School, Geelong, and in 1869–70 at Melbourne Church of England Grammar School. At the matriculation examination in 1870 he won the exhibitions in classics, mathematics, English and French. At the University of Melbourne he topped the class in every year of his course, and graduated M.B. in 1876, M.D. in 1878, and B.S. in 1879. Career In 1876, Allen was appointed demonstrator in anatomy, in 1882 he became lecturer in anatomy and pathology, and from the beginning of 1883 was professor in these subjects. Harry Cranbrook Allen (23 March 1917 – 21 June 1998) was a British historian of the United States. Biography Born on 23 March 1917, Harry Cranbrook Allen was educated at Bedford School and at Pembroke College, Oxford, where he was a Scholar and gained a first class degree in Modern History. He was elected as a Fellow by the Commonwealth Fund of New York in 1939 (he took up the Fellowship at Harvard University after the Second World War). Harrison Allen (1841–1897) was an American physician and anatomist, born in Philadelphia. He graduated from the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania in 1861, and in 1862 became a surgeon in the United States Army and served until the conclusion of the Civil War in 1865. In 1865 he was made professor of comparative anatomy and medical zoölogy at the University of Pennsylvania. He was transferred in 1878 to the chair of physiology, which he occupied until 1895. Harry Allen or Harry Livingston (born Nell Pickerell; 1882 – December 27, 1922) was an American transgender man from the Pacific Northwest who was the subject of ongoing sensationalist local and national newspaper coverage from 1900 until his death in 1922. The newspapers covered his petty crimes associated with life on the margins of society such as burglary, disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, and vagrancy. He was also arrested after being involved in bar fights, and for drunkenness. Family and early life Allen was born in Indiana as Nell Pickerell to Robert P. Pickerell and Jennie Gordon. The Pickerell family moved to the North End area of Seattle around 1894. Jennie Pickerell shared that Allen was allowed to wear boys' clothing and indulge his interest in masculine activities from a young age. Harry Allen (born 1964) is an American industrial and interior designer. Originally from New Jersey, Allen attended Alfred University and later Pratt Institute, where he received a master's degree in Industrial Design. In 1993, he founded Harry Allen Design, located in New York City’s East Village. Designs Allen has designed furniture, lighting, products, and interiors for a variety of international clients. Harry Bernard Allen (5 November 1911 – 14 August 1992) was one of Britain's last official executioners, officiating between 1941 and 1964. He was chief executioner at 41 executions and acted as assistant executioner at 53 others, at various prisons in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and Cyprus. He acted as assistant executioner for 14 years, mostly to Albert Pierrepoint from 1941 to 1955. In October 1955 Allen was appointed as Chief Executioner alongside Pierrepoint, although he did not execute anyone in this role until 10 May 1956, when he hanged two EOKA members in Cyprus. Pierrepoint was no longer available because he had resigned in February 1956. Allen's most controversial hanging came in April 1962, when James Hanratty was hanged for murder, despite efforts to clear his name. Hanratty was proven guilty in 2002 by DNA.
