Harriet Backer
Harriet Backer (21 January 1845 – 25 March 1932) was a Norwegian painter who achieved recognition in her own time and was a pioneer among female artists both in the Nordic countries and in Europe generally. She is best known for her detailed interior scenes, communicated with rich colors and the interplay of light and shadow. Biography Backer was one of four daughters born to an affluent family at Holmestrand in Vestfold, Norway. Her parents were Nils Backer (1815–1877) and Sofie Smith Petersen (1819–1882), and she was the aunt of the painter Astri Welhaven Heiberg (1881–1967). Her father was a shipping merchant and her mother was from a wealthy family. Her family moved to Christiania (Oslo) in 1856. Cora Sandel
Sara Cecilia Görvell Fabricius (20 December 1880 – 3 April 1974), better known by her pen name Cora Sandel, was a Norwegian writer and painter who lived most of her adult life abroad. Her best-known works are the novels now known as the ''Alberta Trilogy''. Biography Sara Cecilia Görvell Fabricius was born in Kristiania (now Oslo), Norway. Her parents were Jens Schow Fabricius (1839–1910) and Anna Margareta Greger (1858–1903). When she was 12 years old, her family moved to Tromsø, where her father was appointed a naval commander. They established their residence at a home rented from the local businessman Johan Henrik Rye Holmboe (1863–1933). Holmestrand
is a town and municipality in Vestfold in Vestfold og Telemark county, Norway. The administrative centre of the municipality is the town of Holmestrand. The town was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). The neighboring rural municipality of Botne was merged into the municipality of Holmestrand on 1 January 1964. Sande municipality merged into Holmestrand on January 1, 2020. The municipality of Hof was merged into Holmestrand on January 1, 2018. The town lies by the Oslofjord and is built beside the water. It was granted municipal status in 1752, but had been a harbour for exporting of timber/lumber since around 1550. Impressionism
Impressionism was a 19th-century art movement characterized by relatively small, thin, yet visible brush strokes, open composition, emphasis on accurate depiction of light in its changing qualities (often accentuating the effects of the passage of time), ordinary subject matter, unusual visual angles, and inclusion of movement as a crucial element of human perception and experience. Henrik Lund (painter)
Henrik Louis Lund (8 September 1879 – 23 December 1935) was a Norwegian painter and graphic artist. Lund was born in Bergen as a son of Lt.-Col. Henrik Louis Bull Lund (1838–1891) and pianist and composer Birgitte Theodora Carlsen (1843–1913). His sister was the composer Signe Lund. He spent much of his young days at sea and probably had a naval career in mind. However, he was not admitted to the Norwegian Naval Academy. He moved to Kristiania, where he met painting student Per Deberitz, who was a student of Hans Gude and who probably turned Lund's interest to this profession. He was a pupil of Harriet Backer (1899), debuted the same year, and studied further with Johan Nordhagen (1903). Lund had his first exhibit in 1899 and his first Autumn Exhibit in 1901. Lars Jorde
Lars Jorde (22 May 1865 – 25 September 1939) was a Norwegian painter and illustrator. Biography He was born at Vang in Hedmark, Norway. He entered the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry in 1889. He studied under Gerhard Munthe, Alfred Philippe Roll, Eilif Peterssen and Harriet Backer, and Kristian Zahrtmann. He studied at Paris and in Italy. In 1905, he moved to Lillehammer and in 1912 to a house that Thorvald Erichsen had had built based upon design by Arnstein Arneberg. He lived in Lillehammer until his death in 1939. He provided decorative work at the Vingrom chapel in Lillehammer (1908), the student hall at the Norwegian College of Agriculture in Ås, and made a series of decorations for Granheim Sanatorium in Follebu (1908–27). Marie Hauge
Marie Octavia Nielsen Hauge (8 July 1864 – 11 November 1931) was a Norwegian painter. Biography Hauge was born at Drammen in Buskerud, Norway. She was the daughter of Hans Thulin Nielsen Hauge and Emilie Ziegler. She spent her later life at Asker in Akershus. In 1888, at the age of 24, she started at Christian Krogh and Hans Heyerdahl's school of art. She also studied under Eilif Peterssen, Erik Werenskiold, Sven Jørgensen and Harriet Backer between 1888 and 1900. In the early 1900s she was in Paris where she spent the years 1903 to 1907 at the Académie Colarossi and Académie des Beaux-Arts. Agathe Backer Grøndahl
Agathe Ursula Backer Grøndahl (1 December 1847 – 4 June 1907) was a Norwegian pianist and composer. Her son Fridtjof Backer-Grøndahl (1885–1959) was also a pianist and composer, who promoted his mother's compositions in his concerts. Biography Agathe Ursula Backer was born in Holmestrand in 1847, in a wealthy and art-loving home, as the second youngest of four sisters, all gifted in drawing and music. Léon Germain Pelouse
Léon Germain Pelouse (1 October 1838 – 31 July 1891) was a self-taught French painter born in Pierrelaye (Val-d'Oise, France). At sixteen, he began working as a traveling salesman. He began painting when he was twenty, as he was serving in the French army as a conscript. His professional painting career began at twenty-seven, with the exhibition of his ''Les Environs de Précy'' (''Near Précy'') at the Salon de Paris of 1865. Despite severe criticism, he continued painting. He moved to Brittany, and there, inspired by nature around Pont-Aven and Rochefort-en-Terre, Pelouse painted landscapes which were exhibited at the Salon de Paris in the following years.
