Hamid Chabat
Hamid Chabat ( ar, حميد شباط – born 17 August 1953, Taza Province) is a Moroccan politician and the previous Secretary-General of the Istiqlal Party. Hamid Chabat has been the mayor of Fes since October 2003 and was elected on 23 September 2003 to lead his party, defeating rival Abdelouahed El Fassi, a relative of former incumbent Abbas El Fassi and grandson of Allal El Fassi. Before holding office, Chabat forged a name for himself in his party's trade union (General Union of Moroccan Workers aka UGTM). Chabat also owns a regional newspaper covering the Fes region. Allal El Fassi
Muhammad Allal al-Fassi (ⵄⵍⵍⴰⵍ ⵍⴼⴰⵙⵉ) (January 10, 1910 – May 13, 1974), was a Moroccan politician, writer, poet and Islamic scholar. Politics He was born in Fes, Morocco. He studied at the University of Al-Qarawiyyin. For many years, his professor and mentor was Abdeslam Serghini. He founded the nationalist Istiqlal party which was a driving force after the Moroccan Army of Liberation (jaish at-tahreer), with many Berbers, in the Moroccan struggle for independence from French colonial rule. He broke with the party in the mid-1950s, siding with armed revolutionaries and urban guerrillas who waged a violent campaign against French rule, whereas most of the nationalist mainstream preferred a diplomatic solution. In 1956, as Morocco gained independence, he reentered the party, and famously presented his case for reclaiming territories that have once been Moroccan in the newspaper ''al-Alam''. The General Union of Moroccan Workers (UGTM) is a national trade union center in Morocco. It was formed March 20, 1960 and has a membership of 695,000. The UGTM has its roots in the agricultural workers of Morocco, although it does have public and private sector workers as well.
