HMS Western Isles
HMS ''Western Isles'' was a command ship of the Royal Navy during World War II, serving as the flagship of the Anti-Submarine Training School at Tobermory on the Isle of Mull under Vice Admiral Gilbert Stephenson. Launched in 1902 as the Dutch Batavier Line passenger ship ''Batavier IV'', after the war she served in the Royal Netherlands Navy as the training ship Hr. Ms. ''Zeearend'' (A 892). She was decommissioned in 1970, and scrapped in 1972. Ship history The ship was built by Gourlay Brothers & Co. of Dundee as a passenger/cargo ship for Wm. H. Müller & Company's Batavier Line, and launched as ''Batavier IV'' in 1902. Of , and with a length of , she was powered by a 3-cylinder triple expansion engine, producing to give a maximum speed of . The ship carried 75 first class and 28 second class passengers, and up to 325 in steerage. Batavier Line
The Batavier Line ( nl, Batavier Lijn) was a packet service between Rotterdam and London from 1830 until the 1960s. The line was established by the ''Nederlandsche Stoomboot Maatschappij'' (known as NSM and in English as Netherlands Steamship Company).Greenway (1986), p.101 History Having attempted unsuccessfully to establish services between Rotterdam–Hamburg and Antwerp–London, the company turned its attention to Rotterdam–London and became the first regular foreign-owned company to set up such a service into London Port. The original boat on the service was the wooden paddle steamer ''De Batavier'' (built 1829). She was replaced by an iron-hulled paddle steamer named ''Batavier'' in 1855, and this ship was replaced by another iron-hulled steamer in 1872. In 1895, NSM sold the company to Wm. H. The Royal Netherlands Navy ( nl, Koninklijke Marine, links=no) is the naval force of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. During the 17th century, the navy of the Dutch Republic (1581–1795) was one of the most powerful naval forces in the world and played an active role in the Anglo-Dutch Wars, the Franco-Dutch War, and wars against Spain and several other European powers. The Batavian Navy of the later Batavian Republic (1795–1806) and Kingdom of Holland (1806–1810) played an active role in the Napoleonic Wars, though mostly dominated by French interests. After the establishment of the modern Kingdom of the Netherlands, it served an important role in protecting Dutch Empire, Dutch colonial rule, especially in Southeast Asia, and would play a minor role in World War II, especially against the Imperial Japanese Navy.
