HMS Swiftsure (S126)
HMS ''Swiftsure'' was the lead ship of Swiftsure-class submarine, her class of nuclear fleet submarines built for the Royal Navy. Entering service in 1973, she served until 1992. Construction and design ''Swiftsure'' was ordered on 3 November 1967, as the first of her class, and laid down at Vickers Armstrongs Barrow-in-Furness shipyard on 6 June 1969. She was launched on 7 September 1971 and commissioned on 17 April 1973. The cost of building ''Swiftsure'' was £37.1 million.Moore 1985, p. 616. Service ''Swiftsure'' became famous for her mission to acquire the acoustic signature of the Soviet aircraft carrier . Upon locating a new unique acoustic sound that indicated the ''Kiev''s presence, hid underneath her for several hours, with her raised periscope just 10 feet under the aircraft carrier's hull, allowing the crew to take photos and record the ship's acoustic signature. Vickers
Vickers was a British engineering company that existed from 1828 until 1999. It was formed in Sheffield as a steel foundry by Edward Vickers and his father-in-law, and soon became famous for casting church bells. The company went public in 1867, acquired more businesses, and began branching out into military hardware and shipbuilding. In 1911, the company expanded into aircraft manufacturer, aircraft manufacture and opened a flying school. They expanded even further into electrical and railway manufacturing, and in 1928 acquired an interest in the Supermarine. Beginning in the 1960s, various parts of the company were nationalised, and in 1999 the rest of the company was acquired by Rolls-Royce Holdings, Rolls-Royce plc, who sold the defence arm to Alvis plc. The Vickers name lived on in Alvis Vickers, until the latter was acquired by BAE Systems in 2004 to form BAE Systems Platforms & Services, BAE Systems Land Systems.
