, - bgcolor="#FFFAFA" HD 173416 is an intermediate-mass giant star in the constellation Lyra. It is a 6th magnitude star, relatively bright for its distance of about 440 light years from Earth. The star HD 173416 is named Xihe (羲和). The name was selected in the NameExoWorlds campaign by Nanjing, during the 100th anniversary of the IAU. Xihe is the goddess of the sun in the Chinese mythology and also represents the earliest astronomers and developers of calendars in ancient China. Planetary system In January 2009, a planet of the star was discovered. This object was detected using the radial velocity method by search programs conducted from the Xinglong Station in China and th Okayama Astrophysical Observatory(OAO) in Japan. Doppler spectroscopy (also known as the radial-velocity method, or colloquially, the wobble method) is an indirect method for finding extrasolar planets and brown dwarfs from radial-velocity measurements via observation of Doppler shifts in the spectrum of the planet's parent star. 1,018 extrasolar planets (about 19.5% of the total) have been discovered using Doppler spectroscopy, as of November 2022. History Otto Struve proposed in 1952 the use of powerful spectrographs to detect distant planets. He described how a very large planet, as large as Jupiter, for example, would cause its parent star to wobble slightly as the two objects orbit around their center of mass. ''Hipparcos'' was a scientific satellite of the European Space Agency (ESA), launched in 1989 and operated until 1993. It was the first space experiment devoted to precision astrometry, the accurate measurement of the positions of celestial objects on the sky. This permitted the first high-precision measurements of the intrinsic brightnesses (compared to the less precise apparent brightness), proper motions, and parallaxes of stars, enabling better calculations of their distance and tangential velocity. When combined with radial velocity measurements from spectroscopy, astrophysicists were able to finally measure all six quantities needed to determine the motion of stars. HD 173416 b, also named Wangshu, is an extrasolar planet located approximately 440 light years away in the constellation of Lyra, orbiting the 6th magnitude G-type giant star HD 173416. This is planet is at least 2.7 times the mass of Jupiter and was discovered on January 10, 2009 by Liu ''et al.'' HD 173416 b orbits at 1.16 AU from the star. However, despite the fact that the planet orbits 16% further from the star than Earth does from the Sun, it has orbital period of only 323.6 days, compared to 365.25 days for Earth. This inverse relationship is caused by the parent star having twice the mass of the Sun, which increases the strength of its gravitational field. This evidence implies that when this star was on the main sequence, it was an A-type star. The planet HD 173416 b is named Wangshu (望舒). Xinglong Station (NAOC)
Xinglong Station () is an observatory (IAU code 327) situated south of the main peak of the Yan Mountains in Xinglong County, Chengde, Hebei province, China. Installed are seven telescopes: a Mark-III photoelectric astrolabe; a 60 cm reflector; an 85 cm reflector; a 60/90 cm Schmidt telescope; a 1.26-meter infrared telescope; and a 2.16-meter telescope. The most recent telescope is the 4m LAMOST.
