Halen (), formerly Haelen (), is a municipality and city located in the Belgian province of Limburg, to the west of Hasselt. On January 1, 2018, Halen had a total population of 9,461. The total area is 36.29 km2 which gives a population density of 261 inhabitants per km2. The municipality consists of the following sub-municipalities: Halen proper, Loksbergen, and Zelem. The Arrondissement of Hasselt (; ) is one of the three administrative arrondissements in the Province of Limburg, Belgium. It is both an administrative and a judicial arrondissement. Battle Of Halen
The Battle of Halen (), also known as the Battle of the Silver Helmets (; ) because of the many cavalry helmets left behind on the battlefield by the German cuirassiers, took place on 12 August 1914 at the beginning of the First World War, between German forces led by Georg von der Marwitz and Belgian troops led by Léon de Witte de Haelen, Léon De Witte. The name of the battle alludes to the Battle of the Golden Spurs in 1302, where of golden spurs were recovered from the battlefield. Halen (''Haelen'' in French) was a small market town and a convenient river crossing of the Gete and was situated on the principal axis of advance of the Imperial German army. Herk-de-Stad (; , ) is a municipality and city located in the Belgian province of Limburg. On 1 January 2018, Herk-de-Stad had a total population of 12,661. The total area is 42.83 km2 which gives a population density of 296 inhabitants per km2. Besides the village of Herk-de-Stad itself, the municipality contains the communities of Berbroek, Schulen and Donk. Lummen (; or ''Lumme'' ) is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Limburg near Hasselt. On January 1, 2006, Lummen had a total population of 13,691. The total area is 53.38 km2 which gives a population density of 256 inhabitants per km2. The municipality consists of the following sub-municipalities: Lummen proper, Meldert en Linkhout. The Gete (; ) is a river in Belgium which flows south to north. It is a left tributary of the Demer.
