''Häxan'' (, ''The Witch''; ''Heksen'' , ''The Witch''; English: ''The Witches''; released in the US in 1968 as ''Witchcraft Through the Ages'') is a 1922 Swedish-Danish silent horror essay film written and directed by Benjamin Christensen. Consisting partly of documentary-style storytelling as well as dramatized narrative sequences, the film purports to chart the historical roots and superstitions surrounding witchcraft, beginning in the Middle Ages through the 20th century. Based partly on Christensen's own study of the ''Malleus Maleficarum'', a 15th-century German guide for inquisitors, ''Häxan'' proposes that such witch-hunts may have stemmed from misunderstandings of mental or neurological disorders, triggering mass hysteria. Benjamin Christensen
Benjamin Christensen (28 September 1879 – 2 April 1959) was a Danish film director, screenwriter and an actor, both in film and on the stage. As a director, he was best known for his 1922 film '' Häxan'' (aka ''Witchcraft Through the Ages''). His most memorable and acclaimed acting performance was in the film ''Michael'' (1924), where he played Claude Zoret, the male lover of the film's title character in a landmark gay film. Edla Hansen was a Danish film editor active from the 1920s through the 1950s. One of the best-known films she edited was 1922's ''Häxan''. Johan Ankerstjerne
Johan Valdemar Ankerstjerne (17 January 1886 – 18 August 1959) was a Danish cinematographer who for many years was head of cinematography at Nordisk Film. He was reportedly the best cameraman in Denmark in the 1910s, making many films for August Blom from 1911 until 1916 and then for Benjamin Christensen. He created the unique "images of Haxan". In 1932 he founded Denmark's first film laboratory, Johan Ankerstjerne A/S which, after merging with Nordisk Film Teknik, became the largest production facility in the country. Career Ankerstjerne first became a watchmaker in Randers. In 1907, he also became an operator in the town's first cinema. Astrid Holm (born Astrid Vilhelmine Rasmussen; 29 March 1893 – 29 October 1961) was a Danish theater and film actress whose career began on the stage and in the early silent film era.
