Daniel Bates
Daniel G. Bates is an anthropologist and human ecologist. He is professor emeritus of anthropology at Department of Anthropology, Hunter College, CUNY. He is also the editor-in-chief of ''Human Ecology''. Education and early research Between 1968 and 1971, Bates conducted ecological fieldwork in Turkey and the Middle East. He received his PhD from University of Michigan in 1971. His doctoral dissertation ''The Yoruk of Southeastern Turkey: A Study of Social Organization and Land Use'' was based on fieldwork in Turkey with the Yörüks. It was published in 1973 by University of Michigan Press as ''Nomads and Farmers: A Study of the Yörük of Southeastern Turkey''. Career Bates' research focuses on the intersection of anthropology, ecology and human culture. Much of his early research focused on nomadic groups in Turkey and West Asia, including adaptive culture, intergroup exchange, systems of pastoralism, and marriage patterns among the Yörük. GEOBASE is a database, multidisciplinary in scope, which indexes bibliographic information and abstracts for the Geographical, Earth, and Ecological sciences, published by Engineering Information, a subsidiary of Elsevier. The broad subject coverage includes earth sciences, ecology, geomechanics, human geography, physical geography, social geography and oceanography. InfoTrac is a family of full-text databases of content from academic journals and general magazines, of which the majority are targeted to the English-speaking North American market. As is typical of online proprietary databases, various forms of authentication are used to verify affiliation with subscribing academic, public, and school libraries. InfoTrac databases are published by Gale, a part of Cengage Learning. InfoTrac was first publicly presented in January 1985 by Information Access Company (IAC) to library professionals at the American Library Association's annual conference in Washington, D.C. EMBiology
EmBiology (formerly EMBiology) is a web-based Software as a service tool from Elsevier in which researchers can view biological relationships between entities, such as genes, proteins, and cells. Launched in 2023, EmBiology queries a Biological Knowledge Graph with 1.4 million entities connected by 15.7 million relationships. It uses a Sankey diagram to visualize search findings, and displays "snippets" of text from relevant scientific literature. ''Current Contents'' is a rapid alerting service database from Clarivate, formerly the Institute for Scientific Information and Thomson Reuters. It is published online and in several different printed subject sections. History ''Current Contents'' was first published in paper format, in a single edition devoted only to biology and medicine. Other subject editions were added later. Initially, it consisted simply of a reproduction of the title pages from several hundred major peer-reviewed scientific journals, and was published weekly, with the issues containing title pages from journal issues only a few weeks previously, a shorter time lag than any service then available. There was an author index and a crude keyword subject index only. Author addresses were provided so readers could send reprint requests for copies of the actual articles.
