Holiday For Strings (song)
"Holiday for Strings", written by David Rose (songwriter), David Rose, is an instrumental composition best known for its use as the theme song for ''The Red Skelton Show'' for over 20 years and as the theme for the Brazilian Game Show Pra Ganhar é Só Rodar o Pião da Casa Própria (To win your own house just spin the wheel) aired by Sistema Brasileiro de Televisão, SBT. Written in 1942, this piece is still recognized today as a classic American composition. The pizzicato strings and soaring melodies give this composition its distinctive sound. Spike Jones did a version using humorous instruments including a male impersonating a clucking chicken. Allan Sherman did a version entitled "Holiday for States" mentioning all the 50 states in the union. David Rose (songwriter)
David Daniel Rose (June 15, 1910 – August 23, 1990) was a British-born American songwriter, composer, arranger, pianist, and orchestra leader. His best known compositions were " The Stripper", " Holiday for Strings", and "Calypso Melody". He also wrote music for many television series, including '' It's a Great Life'', ''The Tony Martin Show'', '' Little House on the Prairie'', ''Highway to Heaven'', ''Bonanza'', '' Leave It to Beaver'', and ''Highway Patrol'', some under the pseudonym Ray Llewellyn. Rose's work as a composer for television programs earned him four Emmys. In addition, he was musical director for '' The Red Skelton Show'' during its 21-year run on the CBS and NBC networks. ''The Red Skelton Show'' is an American television comedy/variety show that aired from 1951 to 1971. In the decade prior to hosting the show, Richard "Red" Skelton had a successful career as a radio and motion pictures star. Although his television series is largely associated with CBS, where it appeared for more than sixteen years, it actually began and ended on NBC. During its run, the program received three Emmy Awards, for Skelton as best comedian and the program as best comedy show during its initial season, and an award for comedy writing in 1961. In 1959 Skelton also received a Golden Globe for Best TV Show. The Sistema Brasileiro de Televisão (; SBT ; "Brazilian Television System") is a Brazilian television network founded on Wednesday, 19 August 1981, by the businessman and television personality Silvio Santos. The company was established after a public tender by the Brazilian Federal Government to form two new networks, created from revoked concessions of the defunct Tupi and Excelsior networks. Pizzicato (, ; translated as "pinched", and sometimes roughly as "plucked") is a playing technique that involves plucking the strings of a string instrument. Lindley Armstrong "Spike" Jones (December 14, 1911 – May 1, 1965) was an American musician and bandleader specializing in spoof arrangements of popular songs and classical music. George Wright (organist)
George Wright (August 28, 1920 in Orland, California – May 10, 1998 in Glendale, California) was an American musician, possibly the most famous virtuoso of the theatre organ of the modern era. Wright was best known for his virtuoso performances on the huge Wurlitzer theater pipe organs at the famed Fox Theater on Market Street in San Francisco and the ornate Paramount Theaters in both New York City and Oakland. In the early1940s he was an active performer on radio, first on the west coast; in 1944 he was transferred to New York City by NBC, and played numerous radio shows from 1944-1951. In 1948 he was hired as solo organist at the Paramount Theatre in Times Square. He left New York in 1951. The early 50s brought fame via his iconic recordings on HIFI Records, using the 5-manual Wurlitzer originally from the Paradise Theatre, Chicago, installed in the home of HIFI owner Richard Vaughn.
