However, ''Osteomeles'' notably have compound leaves, and recent molecular phylogenetics suggests that ''Hesperomeles'' is only distantly related to ''Osteomeles'', and is instead sister to the '' Crataegus''—''Mespilus ''Mespilus'', commonly called medlar, is a monotypic genus of flowering plants in the family Rosaceae containing the single species '' Mespilus germanica'' of southwest Asia.
