Heather Bonner
Heather Bonner (1923–2004) was an Australian Indigenous rights activist, the wife of the first Australian Indigenous Senator, Neville Bonner. Early life Heather Ray Trotter (later Bonner) was born on 3 September 1923 in Ipswich, Queensland, the daughter of Richard Trotter and his wife Lucinda. Her grandfather Hugh Sinclair had been a Queensland politician and Manager of the Queensland Farmers Cooperative Association Factory in Booval. She attended Silkstone State School and Ipswich Girls Grammar School. She worked as a book keeper in the Brisbane Markets in Roma Street, Brisbane after she completed her schooling and was active in the Ipswich Scouting movement. War service and war bride In 1942, Heather Trotter joined the Australian Women's Army Service (AWAS). She served as a Confidential Secretary to General Durrant in the army's Victoria Barracks. Indigenous Australians or Australian First Nations are people with familial heritage from, and membership in, the ethnic groups that lived in Australia before British colonisation. They consist of two distinct groups: the Aboriginal peoples of the Australian mainland and Tasmania, and the Torres Strait Islander peoples from the seas between Queensland and Papua New Guinea. Jagera (tribe)
The Jagera people, also written Yagarr, Yaggera, and other variants, are the Australian Aboriginal people who spoke the Yuggera language. The Yuggera language which encompassed a number of dialects was spoken by the traditional owners of the territories from Moreton Bay to the base of the Toowoomba ranges including the city of Brisbane. Language Yuggera is classified as belonging to the Durubalic subgroup of the Pama–Nyungan languages, but is also treated as the general name for the languages of the Brisbane area. The Australian English word 'yakka' (loosely meaning 'work', as in 'hard yakka') came from the Yuggera language (''yaga'', 'strenuous work'). The One People of Australia League (often abbreviated OPAL) was an Australian Aboriginal political grouping in the 1960s and the 1970s. In contrast to the more radical and left-wing bodies advocating for indigenous sovereignty at the time, OPAL was for most of its existence overtly assimilationist, advocating for the integration of Aboriginal Australians into mainstream white culture. Victoria Barracks is an Australian Army base in the Brisbane suburb of Petrie Terrace in Queensland. History Colonial era Following Queensland's separation from New South Wales in 1859, the new government was faced with a problem: there was no permanent military presence in the new colony. The decision was made to establish a permanent presence at a site known as 'Green Hills'. Construction of the new 'Green Hills Barracks' began in 1864. Neville Bonner
Neville Thomas Bonner AO (28 March 19225 February 1999) was an Australian politician, and the first Aboriginal Australian to become a member of the Parliament of Australia. He was appointed by the Queensland Parliament to fill a casual vacancy in the representation of Queensland in the Senate, and later became the first Indigenous Australian to be elected to the parliament by popular vote. Neville Bonner was an elder of the Jagera people. Early life Bonner was born on 28 March 1922 on Ukerebagh Island, a small island in the Tweed River of New South Wales close to the border with Queensland.
