Hagar Wilde
Hagar Wilde (July 7, 1905 – September 25, 1971) was an American novelist, short story writer, playwright, and screenwriter from the 1930s through the 1950s. She is perhaps best known for the screenplays for ''Bringing Up Baby'' (1938) and '' I Was a Male War Bride'' (1949), two Howard Hawks films, both starring Cary Grant. Early life Hagar Wilde was born Beverly Violet Bidwell in Toledo, Ohio. Career Wilde was a prolific young short story writer and debut novelist when she was hired by billionaire Howard Hughes in 1931, to write dialogue for ''The Age for Love'', starring Billie Dove. Her association with director Howard Hawks included co-writing (with Dudley Nichols) the screenplay for ''Bringing Up Baby'' (for which she had also written the original story, published in the magazine ''Collier's Weekly''), and the screenplay for ''I Was a Male War Bride'' (1949). Bringing Up Baby
''Bringing Up Baby'' is a 1938 American screwball comedy film directed by Howard Hawks, and starring Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant. It was released by RKO Pictures, RKO Radio Pictures. The film tells the story of a paleontologist in a number of predicaments involving a scatterbrained heiress and a leopard named Baby. The screenplay was adapted by Dudley Nichols and Hagar Wilde from a short story by Wilde which originally appeared in ''Collier's Weekly'' magazine on April 10, 1937. The script was written specifically for Hepburn, and tailored to her personality. Filming began in September 1937 and wrapped in January 1938, over schedule and over budget. Production was frequently delayed by Hepburn and Grant's uncontrollable laughing fits. ''Carefree'' is a 1938 American musical comedy film directed by Mark Sandrich and starring Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers and Ralph Bellamy. With a plot similar to screwball comedies of the period, ''Carefree'' is the shortest of the Astaire-Rogers films, featuring only four musical numbers. ''Carefree'' is often remembered as the film in which Astaire and Rogers shared a long on-screen kiss at the conclusion of their dance to " I Used to Be Color Blind," all previous kisses having been either quick pecks or simply implied.
