The Hong Kong Festival Orchestra (HKFO) is one of the biggest youth orchestra and choir organisations in Hong Kong. History Founded in 2009 by Sean Li, HKFO is now one of the largest youth orchestra groups in Hong Kong with over 300 instrumentalists and choristers and five conductors of different backgrounds and experiences. HKFO was initially established in response to the boom of musical education in Hong Kong that began in the 1980s. With the staggering increase of Hong-Kong-born young musical professionals and semi-professionals educated locally and internationally returning to their home city of Hong Kong by the 2000s, the orchestra was set up as a platform where young musical professionals can build their careers, reconnect with their common past, share and learn from one another in a friendly and rewarding atmosphere. Vassily Serafimovich Sinaisky (Russian language, Russian: Васи́лий Серафи́мович Сина́йский, born in Abez camp, Komi Republic, April 20, 1947) is a Russian conductor and pianist. Biography Sinaisky studied conducting with Ilya Musin (conductor), Ilya Musin at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, Leningrad Conservatory and began his career as assistant to Kirill Kondrashin at the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. Sinaisky was Chief Conductor of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra from 1976 to 1989. He served as Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra from 1991 to 1996. Jian Wang (; born 1968) is a Chinese cellist. A soloist, chamber musician, recording artist and teacher, he was the first Chinese musician to ever sign an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon. Early life and education Wang began to study the cello with his father when he was four. While a student at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, he was featured in the Academy Award-winning documentary film, '' From Mao to Mozart: Isaac Stern in China''. Trey Lee (Chinese:李垂誼; pinyin: Chui-yee Lee) is a Hong Kong-born cellist based in Berlin, Germany. A laureate of major international competitions, he appears as a featured soloist with orchestras and festivals all over the world. Yundi Li ( zh, s=李云迪, t=李雲迪, p=Lǐ Yúndí; born 7 October 1982), also known simply as Yundi (stylized as YUNDI), is a Chinese classical concert pianist. Yundi is considered one of the greatest contemporary interpreters of Chopin and is also especially known for his interpretations of Liszt and Prokofiev. Aristo Sham
Aristo Sham (; born 12 March 1996) is a Hong Kong pianist. He is the winner of numerous international prizes and has performed as a soloist with many of the world’s leading orchestras. In 2025, he gained recognition after winning the Gold Medal at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Early life and education Born in Hong Kong, Sham began piano lessons with his mother at the age of three. His father, C.W. Sham, is a physics teacher at tutoring school Beacon College. The Hong Kong Cultural Centre (HKCC, ) is a public multipurpose performance facility in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong.
