The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is an American non-profit medical research organization headquartered in Chevy Chase, Maryland with additional facilities in Ashburn, Virginia. It was founded in 1953 by Howard Hughes, an American business magnate, investor, record-setting pilot, engineer, film director, and philanthropist, known during his lifetime as one of the most financially successful individuals in the world. It is one of the largest private funding organizations for biological and medical research in the United States. HHMI spends about $1 million per HHMI Investigator per year, which amounts to annual investment in biomedical research of about $825 million. Janelia Research Campus
Janelia Research Campus is a scientific research campus of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute that opened in October 2006. The campus is located in Loudoun County, Virginia, near the town of Ashburn. It is known for its scientific research and modern architecture. The current executive director of the laboratory is Nelson Spruston, who is also a vice-president of HHMI. He succeeded Ronald Vale in 2024, who in turn succeeded the initial director Gerald M. Rubin in 2020. The campus was known as "Janelia Farm Research Campus" until 2014. Research Most HHMI-funded research supports investigators working at their home institutions. However, some interdisciplinary problems are difficult to address in existing research settings, and Janelia was built as a separate institution to address such problems in neurobiology. Chevy Chase () is a census-designated place (CDP) in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. The population was 10,176 at the 2020 census. Geography Part of a broader area colloquially named Chevy Chase, the CDP is encompasses 2.5 square miles (6.3 km), all land. The CDP is bounded on its northern and eastern sides by Rock Creek, a tributary of the Potomac River, and bisected by the Rock Creek tributary of Coquelin Run. The latter stream was dammed in 1892 to form Chevy Chase Lake and support an eponymous trolley park. The lake was drained in the 1930s but the adjacent neighborhood retains the name. NATO Integrated Air Defense System
The NATO Integrated Air Defense System (short: NATINADS) is a command and control network combining radars and other facilities spread throughout the NATO alliance's air defence forces. It formed in the mid-1950s and became operational in 1962 as NADGE. It has been constantly upgraded since its formation, notably with the integration of Airborne Early Warning aircraft in the 1970s. Bethesda () is an unincorporated, census-designated place in southern Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. Coconut Grove, also known colloquially as "The Grove", is an affluent and the oldest continuously inhabited neighborhood of Miami in Miami-Dade County, Florida.
