Gällivare Malmbergets FF is a Swedish football club in Gällivare. Background Since its foundation in 2005, Gällivare Malmbergets FF has participated in the middle divisions of the Swedish football league system. The club currently plays in Division 2 Norrland which is the fifth tier of Swedish football. After many years of discussion, the football team of Gällivare Sportklubb (GSK) was merged with Malmbergets Allmänna Idrottsförening (MAIF) at the end of the 2005 season and the new club is now called Gällivare-Malmbergets Fotbollsförening (GMFF). Youth operations are still conducted under the GSK banner and Malmbergets AIF now runs a side in the lower divisions. GMFF plays its home matches at the Malmbergets IP in Gällivare Municipality. Gällivare
Gällivare (; fi, Jällivaara; se, Jiellevárri or ; smj, Jiellevárre or ; fit, Jellivaara) is a locality and the seat of Gällivare Municipality in Norrbotten County, province of Lapland, Sweden with 8,449 inhabitants in 2010. The town was founded in the 17th century. Together with nearby towns Malmberget and Koskullskulle it forms a conurbation with some 15,000 inhabitants. This conurbation is the second northernmost significant urban area of Sweden after Kiruna. Gällivare is situated at the northern end of the Inlandsbanan railway line, about 100 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. Gällivare is located in a major iron ore mining region. Malmbergets Almänna Idrottsförening, MAIF, is a multi-sport club from Malmberget, Norrbotten, Sweden. The club has been most successful in team handball and Nordic skiing. History The club was founded on 22 February 1904. Initially, the club arranged Nordic skiing and cross-country running contests, whereas the construction of a football pitch started in 1905. The club was «restructured» in 1916, and incorporated the wrestling club BK Thule in 1917 and the skiing club Malmbergets SF in 1920. The club's first great athlete was the wrestler J. Välima, who became Swedish champion in 1919 and competed at the 1921 World Championships. In 1936 the bandy section was discontinued, but it was replaced by an ice hockey section in 1944. Malmberget ("The Ore Mountain", Finnish and Meänkieli: ''Malmivaara'') is a locality and mining town situated in Gällivare Municipality, Norrbotten County, Sweden. It had 5,590 inhabitants in 2010, reduced to 927 by December 2020. It is situated 5 kilometres from the municipal seat of Gällivare. The entire Malmberget town was moved in 2020/2021 due to mining activities in the area.
