Gough Street
Gough Street ( Chinese: 歌賦街) is a street on Sheung Wan, Hong Kong, just north of the Soho area of Central. It is connected to Shing Wong Street to the west and Aberdeen Street to the east. The street is informally referred to as "NoHo", north of Hollywood Road. The street is named for Hugh Gough, 1st Viscount Gough, Commander-in-Chief of British Forces in China. History Historically, many local printing presses and old beef-brisket noodle shops were located on Gough Street. Kau Kee Restaurant, is a notable noodle shop that specialises in beef brisket noodles in clear soup (清湯牛腩) located there. In the last several years, a lot of the printing presses moved to other areas and new restaurants and bars began to move into the premises vacated by the printing presses. Now, the street has many international fashion brands and high-end home furnishings. Sheung Wan
Sheung Wan is an area in Hong Kong, located in the north-west of Hong Kong Island, between Central and Sai Ying Pun. Administratively, it is part of the Central and Western District. The name can be variously interpreted as ''Upper District'' (occupying relatively high ground compared to Central and Wan Chai), or ''Gateway District'' (perhaps a reference to the location where the British first entered and occupied Hong Kong). History Sheung Wan was one of the earliest settled places by the British, and belonged to the historical Victoria City. Shing Wong Street () is a street on the hill slope of Sheung Wan and Mid-Levels, Hong Kong. The street extends from Gough Street at its lowest to Caine Road highest. The street is one of ladder streets in Hong Kong, made of stone steps, in the section between Hollywood Road and Caine Road. Between Hollywood Road and Staunton Street, a large terrace at the street east erects two former staff quarters of Hong Kong Police Force built in 1950s, which have been converted into PMQ. Aberdeen Street is a border street dividing Sheung Wan and Central on Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong. It ascends from Queen's Road Central to Caine Road in Mid-Levels. Field Marshal Hugh Gough, 1st Viscount Gough, (3 November 1779 – 2 March 1869) was an Irish officer of the British Army. After serving as a junior officer at the seizure of the Cape of Good Hope during the French Revolutionary Wars, Gough commanded the 2nd Battalion of the 87th (Royal Irish Fusiliers) Regiment of Foot during the Peninsular War.
